Wyvern Knights
The art of Wyvern Taming and riding is a difficult one. It requires a connection between man and beast, constant training in how to fly and fight when saddled to a wyvern, and the learning of the draconic language - not something easy to do for those not descended from the dragons themselves.
When, where, and how Requiems Wyvern Knights were founded is a secret. No one is sure where the knowledge comes from but the general accepted consensus by the public is that a Dragonborn from the Nightlands had some hand in it.
What is known is that Requiem was working on the Wyvern program for years before the official announcement in 450. There are signs throughout the hills and even within the Hilt that Requiem was breeding and training Wyverns. Fort Rosemark was created in 443, which would become the main place for the breeding and training of Wyverns.
The Wyvern Knights are an elite force, with only 65 riders at any given time. Each one is trained up young to be an elite soldier, and then help raise a wyvern from its birth to form an unbreakable bond.
Composition
Manpower
Only 65 Wyvern Riders exist, with the space required to house the beasts as well as the training required making them quite elite.
Equipment
Wyvern knights are attached to their saddles via special half plate that contains buckles to lock into the saddle. They carry large saddly bags filled with days worth of rations and gear in case they are out for awhile or go down.
Weaponry
Other than the wyvern themselves, riders are equipped with long pikes or lances, as well as light crossbows.
Structure
Wyvern Knights are split into "flocks". At the head of each "Flock" is a Wyvern Captain, who commands the flock. Each Flock is 3-5 Wyverns strong.
When deployed, they're often under the command of a Flock Master, who holds a relatively high rank and can order multiple flocks of Wyvern Knights. There are 5 Flock Masters.
All Flock Masters report to Wing General, who has full command over the entire set of Knights.
Tactics
Wyvern Knights are shock assault troops who use fast, destructive, and terrifying tactics. They are trained to strike hard from above to disrupt enemy back lines, deal considerable damage for a few seconds, and then take off before the forces can truly know what happened.
They're also trained for fear tactics, to circle enemy camps, and perform random strikes.
Training
Each wyvern knight is trained young, selected in their early 20s (or species equivalent) for 2 years of extended military training. This is when they are trained in general combat and tactics. Afterwards, they can be selected for Wyvern Knights - which sends them to Fort Rosemark in Pommel or Fort Lyfelde in the Hilt for a year of onboarding and schooling, followed by 3 years of Wyvern raising if they pass. After this, they do another year and a half of bonding and flight training.
