Personal history
EARLY CHILDHOOD
Born as the only child to a middleclass family in a quarter of Solaria, Riley’s initial upbringing was a typical one. His mother, Allory, ran a bakery out of the family home while his father, Verret, served the local guard. Verret had served adequate time in the militia before earning a local position in the guard. Beforehand, Allory hailed from a community within The Twilight. The two met during one of Verret’s military excursions and as Verret described it, it was a courtship that would have tested even the most patient of gods in convincing Allory to return with him to Solaria. Riley’s early childhood was split between school and helping his mother with her bakery, but he always idolized his father. Verret was as skilled with a blade as he was in storytelling and many evenings he would spend regaling Riley with grand tales of his adventures and triumphs.LATE CHILDHOOD
Everything changed after Verret was killed in the line of duty. Officially, Verret perished while assisting the public during a fire, but his many close friends and allies continued to whisper rumors of foul play—that he had crossed the Thieves’ Guild one too many times, that his boastful and playful nature at bars had hit the wrong nerve on the wrong person, or even that it was part of an assassination called in by public officials wishing to make room in the guard for someone easier to bribe. To this day, Riley has no idea as to the truth behind his father’s death. Without Verret’s income, Riley and Allory were forced to move to a cheaper house in a lower class district, and Riley’s schooling was replaced with full-time work trying to rebuild Allory’s bakery business.EARLY TEENS
Perhaps Riley’s life would have been different if he had never met her. Victoria Renwaldt was a sickly girl who spent her worst days bedridden and her best days staring out the window at a world to which she’d only ever be a spectator. Riley made a delivery to her family and when the two met, they became fast friends. Riley often made late night trips to her window ledge and would fill her head with stories about the world, eventually offering to sneak her out of her house at night to help her explore the quarter. At the same time, Riley had taken his father’s old equipment and began practicing with a blade. Although he had seen his father wield a blade several times before, without a teacher these memories served only as the most basic guidelines. By the time he gained any real combat experience, his form had become a self-taught art relying almost entirely on quick wit and reflexes.MID TEENS
As Riley and Victoria continued to grow close, he promised her that one day he would leave to see the world just like his father had, and he intended to take Victoria with him. Her concerns were quelled when he too promised to become strong enough to protect her from anything the world could offer, and if it came to it, he would search every city and ask every person in the world to find her a cure. Riley had never been a bad kid, but many referred to him as something of a troublemaker and by this point in time, he began instigating brawls simply to test his skills and strength. He had taken after his father in many ways—the wit, the charisma, the deftness with a blade—but he also had adopted his father’s knack for pushing people too far or being a little too carefree, creating no end of disputes and conversations between his mother and the guards. THE TURNING POINT One evening when Victoria felt too ill to leave her home, Riley snuck off to a favored bar to spend some spare coin and it was there he overhead talk describing a traveling band of Clerics from Noctus said to be seeking the terminally ill with offers of miracles. Riley spent the entire next day tracking down the Clerics to see if there was anything they could offer Victoria and once he relayed her illness to them, a representative asked to be taken to her house. Although that day, Riley’s head swam with the possibilities of curing Victoria and giving her the life she always wanted, he couldn’t realize that his action would take her away from him forever. The Clerics wished to take Victoria and a few select others back to their homeland for only there would they have the proper resources to tend to her and eventually cure her. They promised she would return home in just short of a year’s time. However, Riley chasing after her carriage as they left town was the last time he ever saw her. Victoria’s parents attempted to send correspondence to Noctus but all were returned in silence and without the money or resources to travel or send anyone to check on Victoria, her parents were stuck never knowing what befell their daughter. Even after they gave up, Riley continued to push and press them to do more, even going as far to offer traveling after her himself. And then his mother, Allory, grew ill. With her passing, the few people Riley valued and the few things that held Riley to Solaria had vanished. He couldn’t afford to hold onto the family home and so it was seized. Victoria’s parents offered some refuge, but Riley’s downward spiral proved too much for their generosity, forcing him to do work at the local pub in exchange for a bed in the back. That is, until he received a letter one evening. Riley,Before falling asleep, I still count the stars.
