In Memoriam

The great city that should not exist. Deep in the unhospitable Melaina marshes this city is located on the edge on one of the few rocky outcroppings in the marshes, which is likely the only reason why it's not currently located underneath instead of in the marshes. Aside from its curious choice of location, so far away from all civilisation, the city feels somehow strange and alien. Certainly the fact that its inhabited exclusively by undead of various level of sentience is partially responsible for its strangeness, but there is more to it. At first glance its not unlike a regular city, but anything past a cursory inspection quickly reveals how thin that veneer of normalcy really is.

Inhabitants

The inhabitants of this city are all undead, all of varying levels of sentience. Quite unlike the traditional simple undead, the inhabitants of this city seem to go through more or less the same motions as alive city dwellers would. They sweep streets, go to marketplaces to trade and socialize and most seem to have some form of a daily routine. For some there is an automatic quality to their behavior, and its these inhabitants that are most reminiscent of undead. Others seem to live lives as rich and complex as any living citizen.

Architecture

It would be a great kindness to call the architecture of In Memoriam "eclectic" and nothing else. Certainly it is that; a confusing mixture of building styles, streets that twist and turn around houses seemingly without any rhyme or reason. The buildings themselves are generally well constructed and are mostly constructed within a single style, but at the street or city block level, no such coherence or consistency seems to exist. Its inhabitants don't seem to be bothered by this at all, navigating the mazelike streets with ease and without any awareness of the piecemeal nature of the city.
