Ideals
Gender Ideals
Jahannite culture is quite patriarchal. Among the nobility, only males can inherit, unless there is no male heir. A distant male heir is preferred over a close female one, and in the event of a woman inheriting a position of leadership, she is expected to seek to abdicate to a man as soon as is reasonably possible. This rule does not officially apply to commoners, though some practice it nonetheless. The only actual leadership positions that women are allowed to hold are those among the clergy.
In Jahannam, men are thought to be more competent in areas seen as requiring planning and close attention to detail. Because of this, administration, farming, scholarship, merchanting, complex manufacturing, military command, and cleaning, among other things, are typically considered men's jobs. Women are typically thought to be more competent in areas seen as requiring improvisation and creativity. Because of this, hunting, simple manufacturing, most forms of artistry, and combat, among other things, are typically considered women's jobs.
Relationship Ideals
Relationships among jahannites are typically polygynous, with men typically having two wives. A man having more than two wives is legal, but is seen as highly improper, and will often result in ostracism. A man who chooses to only have one wife is often seen as somewhat weaker than or less capable than other men.
Among nobility, men are expected to marry one wife for love, and the other for political or economic benefit.
