Selríocht
Structure
Selríocht is a feudal kingdom. All citizens are required to pay taxes to their liege, who is the lord immediately above them in rank. For instance, a commoner pays tax to a Baron, who pays tax to a Viscount, who pays tax to a Count, and so on. The exception to this is a Knight, whose liege is the noble who employs them. In addition to paying taxes, citizens are also expected to serve their liege militarily if called upon. However, this hasn't occurred in some time, as most of the kingdom's lords have begun to appreciate the usefulness of professional standing armies. The kingdom's main titles of nobility are as follows:
High Nobility
- King - The King is the supreme ruler of Selríocht.
- Grand Duke - A Grand Duke rules one of Selríocht's three Grand Duchies under the King's authority.
- Archduke - An Archduke rules an archduchy under the authority of their Grand Duke.
- Marchion - A Marchion is equivalent to a Duke, but has a duchy on Selríocht's border, which grants them additional prestige as well as a small percentage of the tax money that would normally go to the King, to be used to finance their military.
- Duke - A Duke rules a duchy under the authority of their Archduke.
- High Knight - A High Knight is a Knight who is employed by a member of the High Nobility.
Low Nobility
- Count - A Count rules a county under the authority of their Duke.
- Viscount - A Viscount rules a viscounty under the authority of their Count.
- Baron - A Baron rules a barony under the authority of their Viscount.
- Baronet - A Baronet is a Baron who lacks land. Despite being de jure equivalent to Barons, Baronets are typically treated as if they were lower ranking.
- Low Knight - A Low Knight is a Knight who is employed by a member of the Low Nobility.
Minor Titles
Minor titles are those noble titles which are not tied to either the High Nobility or the Low Nobility. They are often auxiliary titles that confer only minor benefits and responsibilities in comparison with the above major titles. There are many such titles, including:- Marshal - A Marshal is the highest rank of military commander save for the King. There can be any number of Marshals, but there are typically only a few.
- Judge - A Judge is someone who has been granted the authority to adjudicate disputes in the name of their liege. Major titles also come with this authority.
- Knight-errant - A Knight-errant is a Knight who is not currently part of any knightly order.
- Ciallboir - Ciallboir is an ancient word from the time of the Firbolgs, which is believed to roughly translate to "wise-woman". In legal terms, a Ciallboir is an advisor of the opposite gender from their liege, who typically lives in their liege's castle. The revival of this title was ostensibly a tribute to the old kingdom, Seannrìogh, as well as an acknowledgment of the wisdom in looking to those with a different viewpoint for advice. In reality, the title is typically used as a polite way to have a thinly-veiled affair.
