Cinderstone Ironworks

A two-story stonework and wooden building stands in Tradesburrow Square, it's ground floor stands with one wall open to the elements, revealing the forge within. The loud, rhythmic clang of metal draws your attention as you notice the dwarven figure hammering away at raw steel. The place seems to lean slightly to one side, and a blast of heat radiates the room as the kiln is opened to heat the metal bar.

Purpose / Function

Cinderstone Ironworks stands as Ashridge’s best and longest-lived smithy—and currently its only one. It’s primarily used as a place to repair and create farming equipment, though it is also renowned for its butchery knives, and is often the lowest-cost shop to find items for self-defense.

Design

The ground floor of the Ironworks is mainly stone, the same old stone that makes up many of the buildings in Old Meadow. There are old, rickety wooden stairs that lead up to the living quarters on the second floor, which is made entirely of stone. The building as a whole is rather large, as it acts as both a forge and a storefront. The open wall will close up during the night with large wooden slats that act as awnings curing the day. They grow ivy and provide shade during the day, and are reinforced with steel to keep thieves out at night.

Entries

There is a back door in the storeroom of the Ironworks in addition to the large open wall. The bottom floor has no windows, except for one very small one in the storeroom. The upper floor has medium-sized windows with old glass which seems to be discolored and uneven.

Sensory & Appearance

Whiffs of metal and flux, the air is filled with the smell with smoke and iron, sweat, and... something else? It is warm, sometimes unpleasantly so in the summer. It is well lit by more traditional style sconces and chandeliers; no electricity runs through this building. It was probably deemed too unsafe to carry the infrastructure.

Alterations

The bottom floor of Cinderstone Ironworks wasn’t always open-air, Brendryn has told Aezon about some various mishaps that resulted in her tearing down the front wall.

History

This building is old. Perhaps as old as the Lovell House and Ashridge itself... though the facts aren’t known to Aezon. Brendryn alludes to have been around for a long time... but nobody is really sure just how long. Its actual age is anyone’s best guess.
