Currency of the Mountain Cities
Differing from the majority,
the Varlori residing in the Mountain Cities have embraced an alternate currency system rather than the widespread
Vesperan Coinage. Their unique system, existing since before the zenith of the Divine Dominion's reign, revolves around assorted precious stones and shards, meticulously cut into square chips and encased within copper frames. Throughout time, various stone types have been employed, yet only those displaying a specific level of hardness and scratch resistance have gained prominence within Varlori society.
Three distinct categories of stoneshards exist: Common Stoneshards, Aventurine Stoneshards, and Sapphire Stoneshards. These are colloquially known as "Nips," "Trells," and "Crests" in terms of currency denomination. Nips are commonly crafted from citrine or similar-quality quartz, minerals frequently found in the mountainous landscapes that the Varlori inhabit. Trells are hewn from aventurine, a semi-precious quartz characterized by its greenish hue adorned with minuscule sparkles. Lastly, Crests are meticulously carved from precious gemstones of varying colors, with the blue sapphire being one of the most iconic options.
