Apellon Redpath
With a name like Redpath, he could have become a warlord or a bricklayer. He used his signature cunning to convince the world that he was the latter. Apellon led a simple life with few notable events, frustrating the scholars who now study his past with reverence. He's recently been unleashed from Haust, and in his crusades he's becoming the most feared man on the continent. He's fond of his reputation, but he often travels in disguise, so that he can talk to people without them sweating bullets.
Developments - Act III
Groundskeeper for the Suttabills
Apellon was raised to be infantry, in a rural town north of Ivormont, which valued the ability to survive and excel in harsh climates. But he grew up in the 7th century, when guerrilla wars on punishing terrain were a thing of the distant past. It seemed like Apellon was being bred for a world which no longer exists. Apellon was unemployed for most of his childhood, and most of his adulthood was spent in the employ of the Suttabills, a minor noble family. He assumed they wanted him as a soldier, but they were more bedazzled by his simple druidic spells; the decadent family turned him into a magical groundskeeper.Performance in battle
His talent as a druid makes him a unique kind of soldier. He can't be beaten by disease or inclement weather, and no form of attrition can shake him off. He doesn't worry about being robbed because he rarely carries anything worth stealing. Always at home, and frequently in pursuit, he travels alone across the whole continent and tends to be spotted in the strangest places. When he's challenged by someone who clearly isn't ready to fight him, Apellon has a favorite trick he likes to pull. He takes a small piece of wood, usually a stick or a plank will do, and he uses Druidcraft to produce a copy of his opponent's weapon. Then he shows them how to use it, until it shatters over their body. The sleeping hero
Apellon has only died twice, which is incredible for his lifestyle. The first time, it's said that he died standing, held upright by the dozens of arrows it took to pin him down. His second death, on the first day of the year 700, is more mysterious. People like to joke that he died of boredom: Apellon didn't want to waste the prime of his life in an era of frustrating peace, so he put his life on pause and told a close friend to resurrect him when the war started. He may have been inspired by the resurrection pact which allowed Marcia's Miscellany to operate over several centuries; his home country wanted a "sleeping hero" of its own. Apellon was resurrected in 708, when the Duumvirate War was starting to get interesting, and he's been controlling the tide of battles ever since. In line with the Duumvirate
Apellon is loyal to the government of Haust and takes great initiative in their brutal campaigns, though he mostly keeps his reasons private. He seems to respect the rest of Agrophon, at least a little bit. He admits that his superiors often make decisions based only on faith, and he likes that the heroes of the Stakes don't accept any situation without evidence. But he also notes that this skepticism isn't always smart. After all, some unfortunate people don't believe Apellon's ghoulish reputation until it's too late. Developments - Act IIApellon can sometimes be encountered in the Feywild fighting various monsters for "practice." He plans to leave their bodies in graveyards with soldiers of the Stakes. That way, if a Mass Resurrection is attempted, the revived people will wake up to an unexpected foe.
Apellon's motives in the Duumvirate War were comfortably simple. All he wanted was a world that rewarded him, and everyone else, in proportion to their strength of character. But as he waged his last campaign, he started to realize that there was weakness germinating in him from a place he never thought to check. He was afraid of losing his touch, afraid of dying, afraid of the world forgetting him and his impact on it.
He never had to deal with this sort of fear before, and he felt helpless under it. This corruption only agitated him further, and finally he was driven to seek healing from the Signeadown.
As a signet, he's sealed away from those invasive fears, and he devotes his overwhelming strength to their mission: the search for true safety and certainty. What parts of Apellon did they have to break, to make him think he was fixed?
