Amphail
The small town of Amphail lies on the Long Road, north of Waterdeep and just east of the Sword Mountains. It is known mostly for its horse breeding and for being a home away from home for several Waterdhavian noble families. In fact, many young nobles are sent here so as to not be an embarrassment to their families in Waterdeep if they are too unruly.
Dark duskwood and spruce trees are everywhere. In one corner of the town square stands the Great Shalarn, a black stone statue of a famous war stallion bread in Amphail long ago. But pranksters often paint the horse in silly colours or decorate it in various ways. Children keep birds from contributing in colour with their droppings by throwing stones at the creatures.
Close to the statue lies the Stag-Horned Flagon, a cozy little tavern.

Government
House Amcathra, House Ilzimmer, and House Roaringhorn, all from Waterdeep, are the ones with the most influence in Amphail. They change leadership from one house to the next every Shieldmeet. The current Lord Warder of Amphail is Dauner Ilzimmer.
House Eagleshield aren't horse breeders, but their investments in both equipment and in veterinarian capabilities make them an important part of life in Amphail. They still haven't become one of the ruling families, however.
Thanks to the influence of nobles, Amphail is a member of the The Lords' Alliance and enjoy the protection of Waterdeep's city guard as well as other member privileges.
Industry & Trade
The main business of Amphail is its horse breeding. But other forms of animal husbandry has also become a portion of the economy. There are a couple of dozen farms outside the town proper, but besides that, the major industries are all about keeping travellers, as well as the local nobles, happy.
Amphail is very known for its silvery Amphail Gray breed of horse, which famous for both its speed and its ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
The downside of all the horses is that when the wind is unforgiving during the warmer months, the stench of horse manure can be hard to deal with.
History
The town is named for Amphail the Just, one of the early warlords of Waterdeep during the Second Trollwar. His ghost is said to sometimes wander the streets of the town.
