Escharon

The chasm Escharon cuts across the northern extreme of the Plain of Strife, almost completely separating the field of Gehenna from the fires of Khorundam. The waters of the River Styx pour into the chasm on the southern edge and plunge into the lower realms, while the spiralling stair of the Fathomless Vertex rises from the eastern end around the Pillar Aspiring. Conflict over this key passage in the Deep War is mostly contested around the Vertex and the upper edges of the cliffs, since battle on the cliff themselves is almost impossible, and skycraft attempting the chasm are buffeted by terrible and unpredictable winds.
For the most part, this critical route is held by the forces of the Hells, but even here their demonic foes have a foothold. The colossal carcass of a fallen Colossus hangs suspended in the northern edge of the Stygian Falls, and from it depend the precarious network of corrupted material fragments that are the pit of the Hanging Cages.
