Sedin (sɛdiːn)
1st of Sun's Swell, AE 721
God of the seas and oceans, Sedin's true nature is the subject of much debate. Some claim him to be exceptionally kind and patient, while others emphasize his mood swings and ruthlessness. Regardless of which side you fall on, all sailors know of his ability to hold grudges; no one who has lost his favor has ever regained it.
Commonly worshipped by sailors, coastal populations, and any merchant whose goods travel by boat, he is given equal parts reverence and fear. For the Qahalem people, he's an especially important deity with many of their most important food sources coming from the ocean.
Tenets of Faith
Sedin himself is not one for espousing ideologies; he is not a deity of lofty ideals or goals, but this does not stop those who worship him from coming up with doctrines of their own.
- No matter how stalwart, that which is unmoving will inevitably crumble
- Recklessness is the easiest route to the grave
- Fighting with honor is for those who have nothing worth truly fighting for
Holidays
Portioning Day – observed by the Qahalem people, portioning day does not have a set calendar date on which it is celebrated. It is celebrated when the first deep frost sets in, determined by the elders of a given community. On this day, each family within a community will set aside a portion of goods, ranging from non-perishing foods, to new items of clothing, to unused tools. These items are set aside by families in a special location in their homes, only to be used in instances of dire need. Should the families make it through winter without having to use their portioned items, it is considered to have been a good winter with Sedin's blessing, and at the first signs of spring, the families will fast for one full day, giving whatever meals they would have eaten as offerings to Sedin.
Social
Family Ties
Sedin is the son of Lovina, one of the two mother goddesses as well as the deity of spring, and Boltun, deity of oration and storytelling. While he does not appear especially close with Boltun, he is often depicted in art at Lovina's side, ever the dutiful son. These depicts are often compared with or outright inspired by those of Avari and Kondrati, both depicting icy, loyal knights at the side of fiercely powerful women.
