Haernos

Haernos is a small city created out of an old army base from an ancient war called the invasion war. It's inhabitants are therefore still largely dragonborn, with a few humans walking about. This place was the start of the Tiefling revolution which led to the creation of the Tiefling Empire.

Demographics

Red dragonborn. Some other races live there as well. The city consists of dragonborn who's ancestors were veterans in the war.

Government

Independent city. Does not fall under the rule of any empires. Veteran descendants earn money selling weapons or offering mercenary services and donate part of this money to the upkeep of the town.

Defences

The city is of course heavily fortified. It is carved inside a mountain so that there is only one possible invasion route; through the front door. Apart from that, there are several lines of defensive walls surrounding the city centre. Each wall on both sides is lined with a moat.

Industry & Trade

Some veteran descendants have become masters in arms producing. Others can't get rid of the lust for battle and offer their services as mercenaries in the area. There are many settlements like this in other mountain ranges.

Infrastructure

Much has been repurposed from war times. Barracks have been turned into housing, watchtowers into mills, stables for war horses into a barn and HQ into a town hall. War time is still very much visible. A canal has been dug from a local river to supply the now permanent settlement with water.

Assets

Arms producers; blacksmiths, fletchers, etc. In the town vaults lie a few magical artifacts that none have found out how to use yet.

Guilds and Factions

The ruling class are called ''the generals''. They held the highest positions in the army, and they hold on to that position. It is a general rule that the higher your ancestor's position in the army was, the higher your position in the city is now. Over the years though, more and more power has shifted to the ''Tiefling Front''. Seen as slaves, these creatures persuade their masters to take certain actions that come to their benefit.

History

During the invasion war, Haernos was an army base like any other. It was the headquarters for the standing army and the training ground for new troops. For most of the invasion war, the base commander was a red dragonborn named Kae'Muzar. His kin still rule the city.. Several years after the invasion war ended, it was discovered that the Tieflings which had been held as slaves, were spies for the forces of evil. This discovery set of the Tiefling revolt which in turn resulted in the eventual creation of the Tiefling Empire.

Architecture

The city is largely dug out of the mountain, so essentially it is one solid piece of stone. After the war ended and the base became a small city, other stone buildings were added using the same stone from the mountain. The dragonborn had no idea about how to build a proper house, so they asked for the aid of the men. Because of this, the city is built largely on human architecture. This means simple stone houses with thatched roofs.

Geography

The mountains are overgrown with grasslands and are the source of many rivers. The mountain in which Haernos is situated (simply called mount haernos) itself is rather barren, due to the years of dragonborn practicing their fighting on the local nature and several sieges that have been made on the city. The surrounding mountains are filled with grass and rivers. Whilst Haernos itself is not located near a river, due to the base needing to be hidden, a canal has since been dug to supply the city with water. This canal comes in through the back of the mountain and is part of a plan to connect more cities in the mountains with these canals.

Natural Resources

The mountains are inhabited by creatures like goats, boars and cave bears. The valleys are roamed by packs of horses and have fertile soil which is farmed by humans. The caves are rich in iron deposits which were used to fuel the war.
