Arch Witch

The witches in Farenia are organised into a structured and hierarchical society known as the Circle of the Moon. This ancient organisation has existed for centuries, evolving through the ages while maintaining its core principles of balance, knowledge, and secrecy. At the top of the Circle of the Moon sits the Arch Witch, who is elected by a convocation of all Elder Witches.

The current Arch Witch is Seraphina Nightshade, a powerful and wise witch who has held the title for over 12 years. Her decisions are final, and she holds immense respect and authority within the witching community.

Appointment

The Arch Witch, the leader of all witches in Alana, is appointed through a rigorous and mystical process. The nomination typically recognises those who have shown exceptional leadership, wisdom, and dedication to the welfare of all witches. For the election to be valid, at least two-thirds of all witches must be present. Witches from different covens propose their candidates during the election; they can only suggest those who are not members of their own coven. Each candidate gets a rune assigned, and the witches cast their votes by tossing small bones engraved with the rune of their chosen candidate into a bonfire. The ceremonial witch then casts a spell onto the bonfire, revealing the winner through the emergence of the victorious rune above the flames.
After the election, a binding ritual is performed, connecting the witches to the new Arch Witch. This magical bond allows her to draw upon their power in times of need.

Duties

The Arch Witch's primary duties are to oversee the harmony and cooperation among the three main covens and their respective sub-covens. She is responsible for presiding over important rituals, guiding major magical undertakings, and representing the witches in dealings with other magical and non-magical entities. She also serves as the ultimate arbitrator in disputes and ensures that the coven laws are enforced.

Responsibilities

The Arch Witch bears the weighty responsibility of safeguarding the secrets and traditions of the witches. She must maintain the balance of power among the covens, ensuring that no single coven becomes too dominant. Additionally, she oversees the training and development of young witches, nurturing their growth and integrating them into the coven structure. The Arch Witch is also responsible for enhancing the witches' knowledge and magical abilities, frequently setting out on quests to uncover new spells and potions.
Often, she delegates some of these duties to another High Witch. Occasionally, a regular witch is entrusted with a task as a trial to assess her capability and potential for advancement.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

The removal or dismissal of an Arch Witch is a rare and grave event. It can only occur if the majority of witches from all covens agree that she has acted against the interests of the witches or abused her powers. A special council is convened, comprising senior witches from each coven who conduct a thorough investigation. If the accusations prove true, a powerful disenchantment ritual strips the Arch Witch of her title and powers, leading to a new election to choose her successor.
