Black Watch

The Black Watch ("Freiceadan Dubh") is the national constabulary and law enforcement organization for the Kingdom of Albion  The Righ charges the Black Watch with the role of protecting the King's person, the King's properties and possessions, the King's Highways and Roads, and the common flora and fauna of the kingdom.

Structure

The Black Watch functions as a clan under the leadership of an appointed chief called the Lord Constable who serves on the Privy Council of The Righ. The Constable General handles the daily functioning of the organization. A hierarchy of leadership handles control of local operations.   The basic functional unit of the Black Watch is the Patrol. Each standard patrol consists of a leader, a lieutenant, a sergeant, 3-4 men-at arms, 1-2 dozen soldiers, and a mage or cleric. The size can vary depending on location in the kingdom and the presence (or lack of) difficulties and/or trouble.   Specialized patrols also exist covering intelligence gathering, disaster, prisons and ad hoc situations. Structure of these units varies as needed.

Culture

The Black Watch is a long standing organization with great honor and respect among the peoples of the Kingdom of Albion. The have served The Righ honorably and well for a number of centuries. They are extremely loyal to the throne.   Membership is sought after by many but granted to few. Applicants must pass rigorous physical, mental, spiritual, magical and loyalty tests before full admittance to the Black Watch. Death while serving as a member of the Black Watch is considered one of the highest honors a subject of the Kingdom of Albion can earn.    The culture in the organization is one of "brotherhood" (although all genders and races are eligible to apply), strength, honor and above all--loyalty (to both The Righ and the Black Watch organization).

Public Agenda

The Black Watch serves as the main kingdom-wide law enforcement and constabulary. Their role is to keep the peace and carry out the will of The Righ across the lands.    Their charge does not cover activities in the boundaries of hamlets, villages, or cities unless specifically asked by the leader of that urban area, or ordered by upper leadership of the Black Watch. The King expects that each urban entity provide for their own defense and manage their own populace. The exception comes when trouble or violence spills out of the boundaries or threatens the general peace and welfare of the kingdom. The definition of that is left to each Patrol leader when to get involved.
