Auchendow Obsidian

Properties

Material Characteristics

Obsidian holds the appearance of a shard of glass, but with a natural shade ranging from deep-purple to black. Smooth and reflective, obsidian will often display it's contours with a glossy sheen.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Weapons. Weapons and ammunition made out of Auchendow obsidian which do slashing or piercing damage ignore any resistances to slashing or piercing damage. In addition, when a creature is hit with a weapon made from obsidian which does slashing or piercing damage, the weapon does one additional die of it's damage to the target.   Armour. Any creature takes 1D4 piercing damage if it comes into contact with you whilst you are wearing armour embellished with Auchendow obsidian, this damage ignores any resistances to piercing damage. Only medium and heavy armour (excluding hide) may be embellished with obsidian.   Vulnerability to Adamantine. If you hit an object made from adamantine with an Auchedow obsidian weapon or piece of ammunition, the weapon or ammunition shatters. If you make an attack roll against a target wearing adamantine armour, is made out of adamantine (like an Adamantine Golem), or is wielding an adamantine weapon and fail the attack roll by 5 or more, the weapon or ammunition shatters. This threshold reduces to 3 or more if multiple conditions are met (for example, a fighter wearing adamantine armour wielding an adamantine long sword). Finally, if you are hit with an adamantine weapon whilst wearing armour embellished with Auchendow obsidian and the attack roll succeeds by 5 or more, the obsidian embellishments on the armour shatter and cease to function.

Origin & Source

Auchendow obsidian is only found in the Auchendow province, where volcanic activity from The Confluence caused large lava flows which cooled to create the crystal. So far, only two mines have been successfully established in the region. However it is believed more raw material exists across The Cinder Peaks.

History & Usage

History

Obsidian was first discovered by the old dwarven inhabitants of Auchendow, who set out to explore the new mountainous region they lived in.

Distribution

Trade & Market

Given the fracturing nature of the material, obsidian is perfect for making weapons, specifically those which cut and pierce. It can also be used to create tools and decorative objects. Obsidian trade is very common in Auchendow. The material is also exported to the rest of Concordia via Portstoke, however the price of the material outside of Auchendow is usually incredibly high.
