The Dragonborn-led settlement of Saxr is the largest and most influential city in the fertile region of Chorto . Known for its strong, earthbound culture, Saxr is a bustling city that thrives not on commerce of gold and silver, but through the exchange of essential resources like grain, alcohol, and livestock. Its strategic position in the heart of Chorto’s agricultural lands has made it a vital hub for both the region’s inhabitants and nomadic tribes that traverse the surrounding plains.Saxr’s bank, a formidable stone structure carved with draconic symbols, functions more like a massive granary and distillery than a traditional bank. While small amounts of metal coinage pass through, it primarily stores and secures vast amounts of grain, alcohol, and other essential provisions. These stores are treated as currency, traded and exchanged by both residents and passing merchants, reflecting the pragmatic culture of the Dragonborn and their allies.
The city is built around collaboration between mostly Kobolds and Centaurs, who work the fertile lands side by side. The Kobolds, traditionally associated with Dragonborn society, handle much of the agricultural infrastructure, from irrigation to storage, leveraging their industrious nature to maximize crop yields. Meanwhile, the Centaurs are known for their deep understanding of the land and its natural rhythms, guiding the farming cycles and tending to the large herds of livestock. Together, they ensure that Saxr has enough food to sustain its large population and feed the nomadic tribes of Chorto who rely on the city’s surplus during their travels.
While Saxr’s population is primarily Dragonborn, Kobolds, and Centaurs, there is also a small yet noticeable presence of humans in the city. However, these humans are not your typical settlers. Most of them have found their way to Saxr after being cast out or ostracized from other parts of the world, particularly from more “civilized” lands where they no longer fit in. Many are exiles, fugitives, or those who reject the structured norms of other kingdoms. Here in Saxr, they find a degree of freedom, albeit on the fringes of society. These humans often take up labor-intensive roles or join the city’s rough-and-tumble underbelly, helping to run taverns, small shops, or even working as hired muscle for trade caravans.
The city's leadership, rooted in Dragonborn traditions of honor and strength, fosters a unique sense of resilience. Though Saxr lacks the grandeur of other major cities, its people value practical wisdom, hard work, and self-sufficiency. The city's defenses are primarily in the form of natural barriers—fields of dense grain and rolling hills—though the Dragonborn leaders maintain a well-trained militia to fend off any external threats. The city’s leaders, known as the Saxr Dragoons, serve as both governors and protectors, embodying a mix of warrior spirit and pragmatic rulership.
In Saxr, wealth is not counted in precious metals but in the lifeblood of its land: food, drink, and the strength of its people. It stands as a testament to the power of cooperation and survival, a rugged yet thriving outpost in the vast, untamed region of Chorto.
