The
Lōka are a largely nomadic culture situated between the
a'Tori and
The Aven Caliphate to the east and west.
Lōka Culture
The Lōka are nomadic, and reject any notion of ownership of the land--this is what has prevented their officially dividing their nation into any sort of smaller units.
They are great domesticators of cattle, of horses, and of anything that can be herded, and one family often will move thousands of animals with them as they wander.
Lōka nomadism is arbitrary; that is there are no set routes for family units to follow. Traditionally, a
Lōkan territory is a vast amount of grassland with a single central settlement, known as a
kendra.
There are some families--referred to as
Apriya--who do not travel, and are settled, usually in
kendras, but also in other cities, where they are able to produce economically viable crops year-round and provide services needed by the nomadic groups. These families do not have a vote in the affairs of the nation, at the same time, they are held as protected from any internal strife. To harm an
Apriya is considered a heinous crime, punishable by death.
The Kendra
A
kendra is a traditional Lōkan settlement, usually at the center of a territory.
Kendras are arranged in concentric rings; in the center, tents arranged in a tight square where the
Apriya live. Then, a ring of rectangular spaces for travelers to set camp, surrounded by a circle of waystations with tables, storage, and tented coverings for trade of goods and services. Finally, at the outskirts of the
kendra, a ring of wooden pens of various sizes for temporary holding of the massive herds.
Anha
Anha refers to the spiritual practices of the
Lōka.
Anha is pervasive throughout most of
Lōkan life, as such, distinguishing between its cultural components and lifestyle impacts (which would usually be covered in this article) and its religious aspects is a futile endeavor.
As an example of this, the layout of the
kendra detailed above corresponds both to the
Lōka view of social organization and to their cosmology.
The monasteries of Lōka in the
Zewedi Mountains are famed for their prodction of highly skilled
Monks.
