a'Tori

The a'Tori dominate the northwest of Mizra'aki.   The nations that identify as a'Tori are, alphabetically,
  • Awira
  • The Badoneti Wastes
  • The Diniberi League
  • High Tori
  • The Joro Protectorate
  • Kirich
  • The Mehali Kingdom
  • The Yalihon
  • There is dispute as to whether the a'Tori hail from Toribet or from Tenya City, but regardless, they trace their history to one of the two provinces in High Tori.   Most religious a'Tori follow either Siriati or one if its derivitives.

    a'Tori Culture

The a'Tori are a very complex culture, with a fair bit of social ritual. Greeting someone--even someone you've only met briefly--requires many exchanges, as well as inquiries into their health, the health of their family, etc. That said, they are also a very private culture, and for all the complexity of social interaction, are slow to truly share personal details.

    Coffee Culture

Coffee is ubiquitous in a'Tori countries, readily available, and almost always offered to guests. Indeed, if you were to enter someone's home and not be offered coffee, it would be a clear sign that you were not truly welcome there, and should very quickly find an excuse to leave.   The a'Tori coffee ceremony (sineka) is relatively standard throughout the culture, although there is some variation from region to region. Thematically, it is a ritual of recurrence, of reinforcing the social and cultural bonds that join the a'Tori people.   Almost all houses have a small open fire , next to which sits a special, small airtight container and a grinder. The ritual involves roasting a portion of beans over the fire, while the most recently beans previously roasted are ground and brewed, and offered to guests (almost always to the females first, in descending order of age--if the age is unknown, the host will sometimes offer the first cup to a child or other clearly younger guest, at which point the guests will identify themselves by age by raising a finger in the desired order).   The coffee is smelled, appreciated, and then left to cool for at least a minute before consumption. It is assumed that matters of great importance will wait to be discussed until after the first cup (kideme) is completed.   Coffee is usually served with a mix of nuts, dried grains, and roasted corn, all topped with a very spicy mix of ground peppers. This is referred to as gibbe, and is a very common snack (with great regional variation) throughout a'Tori lands.

      Military action

The Wars of the Rivers refer to the years of violence that led to the expansion eastward of The Mehali Kingdom, culminating in it both solidifying its hold on the lands north of the Lōka Matribuni and expanding its control into lands at one point considered part of The Camian Duocracy.   Its name came from the pattern of warfare, where the Mehali forces would literally advance from one of the waterways flowing north into the Kizikaze Ocean to the next.
