When Zariel was sent to Avernus by Esanihen, her armies and lieutenants went with her. Olanthius was one of her two highest-ranked officers, along with Haruman. He fought alongside her until the day of their defeat in Stygia at which point Zariel ordered her remaining troops to flee for their safety. Olanthius and Haruman remained at Zariel's side, and Asmodeus captured all three, subjecting them to torture until Zariel consented to serving him.
When Zariel accepted Asmodeus' offer and became an archdevil, Olanthius attempted to fall on his sword, but Zariel reanimated him and forced him to serve her in undeath. He currently presides over the Crypt of the Shattered Gibbous, where the souls of those who followed Zariel into the Nine Hells are trapped.
Though Olanthius knows that he is damned, he has managed to recover the wings that Asmodeus tore from Zariel's body on the day that she fell. He believes that the wings, together with the last tear Zariel ever shed and the Sword of Esanihen, could restore Zariel to what she once was and free him from his eternal damnation.

Physical Description

Body Features

Olanthius wears dark plate armor bearing the symbol of the waxing gibbous moon, but thousands of years of service in the Blood War has scratched the symbol irrevocably, such that it now appears the moon has been shattered into several fragmentary pieces.

Facial Features

The only sign that a living creature inhabits Olanthius's dark plate armor are the glowing orange embers of his eyes. When he speaks of the tragedies and horrors of his past, his eyes burn with emotion.

Olanthius was a paladin of Esanihen and one of Zariel's highest ranking lieutenants during her famous sortie into the Nine Hells. He was one of two who stood with her when she was defeated, but when she consented to serve Asmodeus as archduke of Avernus, he took his own life. However, Zariel did not let him die in peace, and instead raised him into undeath and bound him to her service for eternity. Thousands of years of committing evil deeds in her service has numbed his sense of right and wrong, and he believes that Esanihen is at fault for turning her back on him and Zariel in their time of need.
