Personal history

Julia's childhood bounced between the very good and the very bad. Her mother, Elske, is a very conservative German Evangelical and, as such, did not believe in abortion. She saw Julia as her divine punishment for sleeping with Jahn, and as soon as she tracks him down makes it clear that Julia is his problem, too. Jahn, absolutely horrified at Elske's decision-making, lavishes his attention on the child but makes it clear to Elske that his life is not one that would welcome a baby. She promises to do well by the kid, and does- whenever he is around. As Julia grows older, she madly idolizes her father and dreams of growing up to join him on his great adventures but tries to stay on the straight and narrow when it's just her mother around. She is able to communicate with Jahn through an enchanted journal but never tells him how her mother treats her- she doesn't want him to worry. 
When she is twelve years old, Jahn disappears. She knows that he is on a particularly dangerous mission and had followed along with his plans. When he stops writing, she becomes

History

When Melissa introduced her new friend Julia to Annemarie, it was tolerance at best. Annemarie was used to being popular and the shiny new German girl was sure to rattle the eighth-grade status quo. It very quickly became apparent that, though Julia was loud and daring, flirtatious and brash, she had no interest in most school activities and even less desire to steal Annemarie's new boyfriend. 
For almost ten years, they existed solely within the radius of the other, both friends of Melissa's but mutual acquaintances of each other. It wasn't until Julia offered passage to Iona that they began to connect. And even then, Annemarie's drama took over Julia's single-minded plan for revenge, and she found herself caring nonetheless. Some of the few Mainlanders in Iona, that shared experience became everything to them.
Eventually, when the four split up to do their own thing, Annemarie keeps tabs on Julia. They connect when possible, and support each other unquestioningly.
