The world burned. Desperate to stop the 4th dragontide, the last empire of man unleashed the legions of hell upon the material plane. The balance of the planes shifted, and the endless hordes of the abyss began leaking through at the seams. Eventually the dam burst and the horrors of the abyss spilled on to the material plane, plunging the world into The War of Blood and Flame - a three way slug out between the devils, the demons, and the dragons all brought on by the hubris of man. Oops.   The vestiges of mortal sentience fled to the moon above where the marriage of magic and machinery allows them to scrape out a meager living while the world smoulders below. The gods are distant, your demons are close.
