Emperor Valerian

Known as the last Caleian Emperor, Valerian's reign wasn't particularly extraordinary. For generations now, the emperors had been completely ignoring the Senate and mainly just worrying themselves with expanding their own pockets as well as the pockets of their patrician benefactors and that didn't change under Valerian. The emperor continued the persecution of the Cult of Modaris that had started under his grandfather and even expanded it to officially ban the Modarite Cult in its entirety after the supposed murder of his younger sister by one of the church's priests. Records of this are spotty, particularly with them all being hidden beneath the rubble of the Capital, but Valerian's edict against the cult is known and still followed in most of the southern Provinces.
Valerian ruled through the final days of the Imperial Age, and lived to see the unthinkable: the fall of Caleia, both empire and city. In the final months of his reign, the emperor began losing his mind and entrusted much of the empire's affairs to an unknown northern mystic. This would prove to be his, and the world's undoing as in the final days of Caleia, the emperor gathered his five wisest mages to perform a mysterious ritual on behalf of the traveling mystic. Supposedly, the ritual was to save the emperor's dying son, but given that it finished the night the Capital fell, nobody save for the dead now know what truly happened in that ritual. Its aftermath though, is clear: that very night, the Capital itself, untouched and unsacked for nearly two thousand years, began to blaze like an inferno and collapsed into pure chaos. With it fell nearly all of the empire's administration and bureaucracy, something which splintered the empire apart. Legions abandoned their northern watchtowers when nobody returned to pay them and everywhere, governors either took matters into their own hands or fled altogether. Valerian died that night outside the Imperial palace, supposedly battling a horde of freed monsters with his private guard. With him, the Imperial line and the Fourth Age came to an end.
