Industry & Trade
Traditionally Saltmarsh has worked the fertile fishing ground around the coast; various trade ships unload their goods on the docks. Saltmarsh has also been home to illicit smugglers. More recently, at the behest of the Duke, a dwarven mining operation has been bringing riches to the Duke and surrounding area. Whether that’s a good or a bad thing depends on who you ask. The merchants look forward to more business, but the fishers don’t see how the mines will do anything to enrich their coffers. If anything, they fear that competition for fish will become more ferocious as the town grows.
Fishing
Most of the town's folk work in the fishing industry, and is considered to be the backbone of Saltmarsh. The wealthiest families own their ships, while the poorer folk work as deckhands. It's perhaps unsurprising that this work is challenging and dangerous; however, many folks try to save their money in the hope that they can purchase a boat.
Trading
The wealthiest families in town are involved in the transport and trade of goods from over the Azure Sea. Exports include foodstuffs from the surrounding farmsteads, with most manufactured goods imported. Of course, marine items are created locally including; rope, net and barrels.
Smuggling
With its good trade connections, and as a sleepy backwater town, Saltmarsh is a perfect location for the trafficking of illicit goods. Smugglers will often bring in highly taxed goods, or some will even transport illegal goods. Several fishers will often moonlight as smugglers, rowing out in the dead of night, to unload smuggled goods. Many of the locals see smuggling as a victimless crime and resent the Duke's growing insistence on cracking down on it.
Mining
The mine outside town is a new development. Despite the scepticism of the locals, the mine has started to yield silver in growing quantities, and the dwarves are convinced that the nearby cliffs are rich with gold. If the mine takes off, Saltmarsh could transform into a sprawling boomtown overnight.
