Lake of Lost Voices
The Lake of Lost Voices, also known by just 'The Garden Lake', is a lake situated in the middle of The Garden of Shadows. The lake itself seems to be the source of city's magic, the very font of it. In past, it also used to be the favoured way of executing rebels, criminals and heretics by drowning them in the surprisingly deep lake. That's why the lake got the name; occasionally one can clearly here whispers of those who were killed there, or at least that's how the common urban legend goes. The Lake is also the emergency resource of city's drinking water, although it's ill-adviced to drink it without throroughly filtering it first.
Geography
The Lake is surprisingly deep and even though the water is clear, the bottom consist of dark gravel and sand. In the middle of the lake there is an old stone platform, on which the executions were once carried out.
Ecosystem Cycles
The Lake waters seem to follow their own schedule; the lake has a tide, but it's not tied to the phases of the moon (what a sacrilegious idea in a Lolthian society!) but they seem to follow their own particular pattern: first a larger tide happens after a fortnight, which then repeats once and then a smaller tide comes after a week, so full cycle is 5 weeks long. This 5 week period is often used in Drissab'aun as a unit of measuring time, called either a full tide or a lost tide, after the lake's name.
Localized Phenomena
Aside from claimed whispers, the lake's water levels change color and fluctuate, following certain intervals. Those intervals are sometimes used in the city to more throgouhlly mark the time of historical events. No one knows why it does that, or has been bothered enough to find out the reason why.
Fauna & Flora
Due to the seaweed and other aquatic plants, it's difficult to see the bottom and the vegetation offers the perfect camouflage for many species of fish and other creatures... of which some might be more dangerous than the others. Large mushrooms border the lake and it's probable that the extraordinary bright colors of those mushrooms are due to the waters of the lake, because the lake's water does have an odd sheen in it and possibly other unknown properties.
