Growing up illya found interest in things such as exploring the wilderness, swordplay, and other things seen as the "man's job" her parents frequently would scold her and tell her to be more lady like.

When illya got close to 65 her brother became the head of their family and inherited the family's moon blade(it was the symbol to say that they were the family's head) a grand ball was held in celebration and during the ball illya's mother and father told her they had found a suitor for her, illya rejected the notion of being married off for status and abandoned her family.
During her time away she did odd jobs in the nearby human city in order to get by on occasion she would hear rumors about demon and devil sightings in nearby villages and cities then one day she heard that her home town had been attacked. She spent a day preparing for travel then went to her family home and nothing remained.
After searching the village she found her brother sylvain barely clinging to life missing an arm and clutching the moon blade and their mother's ring with the other, illya ran and grabbed some vines to cut off the blood loss and used a torch to cauterize the wound. Sylvain passed out from the pain and awoke a few hours later in the human city with illya next to him, after a long conversation illya discovered that he failed in protecting the family as it was expected of him and from the beginning he thought she should have been the successor instead, and handed her the sword. Illya didn't want the sword and told sylvain to keep it but he insisted she carry on their legacy and said he wasnt fit for it nor was he going to be around long enough to carry it on, after a week he died from a curse placed on him by one of the demons.
Upon clearing the room of her brother's belongings she found her mother's ring and 2 notes one written by her father and the other her brother
This moon blade had been in the siltveil family for 6 generations and has only ever served male elves as masters thinking that women and half elves weren't fit for a life of the blade but was open to the prospect of serving one if the candidate displayed skills beyond the previous masters
