A I: Channeling of Arcane Energy
The Channeling of arcanic energy is an ancient form of bending the laws of nature in one's favor.
An act, which traces back to even the most primitive of life forms, where the arcane breath of the Spirits is guided through the veins of a capable being. And formed into an element-controlling energy, able to manipulate nature, or be manifested into a physical form, as it gets expelled from the body.
Whilst sounding rather simple on a surface level, Channeling is an art that's not to be trifled with.
Although it is believed that every creature and sentient race is able to at least perform it on a primitive or primal level, any careless attempts of exceeding one's limits, might also easily lead to an untimely demise.
As even the intake of just small amounts of this mysterious energy can cause the blood of an inexperienced Channeler to heat up drastically. And in some cases, may even lead to it boiling, igniting an ethereal flame from within, able to consume one's soul.
Detailing the process of Channeling, the Channeler would at first need to sense the amount and density of arcanic breath around them, to safely judge the intensity of which they are going to allow for it to flow into their body.
As when standing in the midst of an arcanic fountain, opening up completely to it would be similar to guiding an entire river of liquid flames right through one's veins. Whilst on the other hand, opening up just a small passage for the arcane breath to flow in would only result in ineffective manifestations, if the amount and density of arcanic energy in the air is too low.
Next, after the Channeler knows how much energy is in the air, they would need to open up an ethereal passage, mostly at their palm or fingertips, to let the breath of the Spirits flow into their bloodstream. Where the process of Channeling truly begins.
Once the arcanic energy of the Spirits is flowing through the Channelers veins, it will mix with the Channelers blood and heat up drastically, enabling it to be formed into the desired manifestation or nature manipulating energy, before being expelled in its physical form.
With a longer channel time and path through the body leading to both a more powerful manifestation, but also a higher risk of the ethereal flame burning up the Channelers body from inside out, or may even consume their soul.
Starting with the primitive and primal level, Channeling is divided into 5 stages of mastery. Where the first two are the most save, but also the least effective ones.
With primitive only consisting of manifestations that have been channeled no longer than a second within the Channelers body, and are therefore often quite fast, but even less effective than a simple physical attack.
However, if used correctly in combination with a physical-based fighting style, primitive Channeling can effectively enhance physical attacks with elemental properties. Such as igniting an arrow before shooting it at a target, or increasing the length of a sword with a brief addition of a wind blade.
Where primal being a natural adaptation in many creature's wild life, to aid their survival. Which is almost entirely just used in a well-balanced form of necessary utility, and not offensively.
Moving on to the advanced level of Channeling is where it starts to become potent.
With an average channel time of 3 to 5 seconds, and manifestations that are able to even set larger creatures ablaze, cut through trees, or chip away at rocks.
To reach this level of Channeling, most sentient races often have to train both their body and mind over decades, in order to be capable of handling the strong heat, each advanced manifestation creates.
Followed by the primitive, primal and advanced, then comes the exalted level.
A form of Channeling which doesn't just use the arcane breath of the Spirits, but also their scorching hot essence. To create awe-inspiring manifestations, able to rival even the strength of the Ancient Dragons.
With large walls of flame, to sever an entire army from the battlefield, ice-cold gusts of wind, to instantly freeze whole groups of monsters solid, or even the summoning of semi sentient Elementals, to fight along the Channelers side.
However, given the requirement of needing to channel the very essence of the Spirits, as well as a channel time of up to 10 seconds, rarely anyone ever comes close to reaching this mighty level of Channeling.
And even amongst the immortal race of Elves, there is only a small handful of gifted Channelers, who are known to have ever truly mastered the exalted level.
Nonetheless, despite this already rare and powerful form of Channeling, it still gets dwarfed by the last, divine level of this ancient art.
The highest peak of Channeling, said to be powerful enough to wipe out entire cities with just one single manifestation, or even rebind body and soul if their ethereal forms still linger within this world.
Though, in order to be able to channel just one of these god like manifestations, the Channeler would have to defy the very laws of nature itself. As it requires the full intake of the Spirits' essence within an arcanic fountain, as well as a vulnerable channel time of up to a whole minute.
Furthermore, if a Channeler actually manages to perform such a task, and survive, their body would immediately collapse in place, followed by a dwindling consciousness, and an at least day long coma to recover.
Additionally, besides the 5 levels of Channeling, there are also 3 unique ways how a Channeler can use this ancient art, apart from elemental manifestations or nature manipulating energies.
One being the creation of Arcanic Cores, in which a special gemstone or ore is infused with the breath of the Spirits, or their essence. In order to then be melded into a weapon, armor or structure, to enchant said craft, and enable it to channel its own manifestations.
Another one being the healing of wounds, which is perhaps the most delicate form of Channeling. As it requires the Channeler to carefully guide the Spirits' breath through the veins of their target, instead of their own, and manifest it within their body as the very same energy that seems to be causing the natural evolution to accelerate.
Due to this risky infusion of form altering energy, it is not uncommon for an unprepared Channeler to either cause an unwanted mutation as a side effect, or accidentally boil the blood of their target, worsening their condition.
Which also leads us to the third and forbidden practice of Channeling, called Infusion itself.
In which the Channeler would forcefully fill up another one's body with arcanic energy, or even essence, and cause their blood to boil and their body to weaken, until they eventually even combust from within in an agonizing inferno of ethereal flames.
Leaving nothing but a souless husk of incinerated skin behind.
