Recap
The party sneaks into the Enforcer's barracks at Svartgrube, kiling only Hana the guard and imprisoning Gobey and Kuluc. They outfit themselves with armor, disguises, two rings of Fire Resistance and 6 Potions of Fire Resistance. And then they set off up the ravine to Riner Ild, the unusual wind wipping every direction, crates of ore covered with tarps lining the road until it splits into three paths. Down the center path they come to the locked iron gate in a cove of obsidian. The three locks are unlocked after solving each lock's warning. Entering through the gate brings them to the caldera, but they aren't alone. The Plan
Current Day Early Night Water Cycle Day 10 They stand at the gate lodged within the obisidian skull of Ild. Kilith feels the heartbeat of Ild grow stronger. Despite your protections, the heat singes your throat as you breathe, and though there is an absences of ash it feels as though ash coats your mouth. The smell of molten metals hangs heavy in the air and the night is dark. And standing about 40 ft away at the lip of the caldera is a figure at least one of them recognize. In fact, they all do as soon as they see the greenish glint of full plate with the bit of light you've brought. Servitor Zaru Kulden stands facing you, imposing despite the distance. On closer inspection, there's a fresh slash on his jaw, and scratches on his armor. It looks like he's tried to clean up the armor, but smears of blood and grime still linger. His sword is still sheathed on his back and if he draws it, it will also show notches and wear and tear. "It seems the warnings did not dissuade you from opening this gate." He throws his hands up. "I do not desire to fight. I come here to plea, to reason with you." "Our first encounter... I admit, it did not go well. I... apologize." Kilith feels the pull and tugging of Ild, drawing him to the caldera. And Holg feels the rage of And roiling up inside him. "But please, listen to me; believe me. Do not do this. I'm not asking you to stop because of selfish reasons, but that you do not know what you are unleashing back into the world. The destruction, the death, the carelessness, the chaos." "You have not seen what they had wrought in the past. When they would simply fly overhead and villages would freeze. When they would fight amongst themselves, altering the very shape of the land. We killed them, to release their power and free the people of the world from its abuse. We didn't know... the cost." "How did Omdanne convince you?" "There are other paths forward. You (Sil'Ferrous) were part of that research. Magical efficiency. And you (Kilith) know the price ones pay; do you believe returning the dragons would give any senseful death?" "You truly desire to take this path? Then I have failed to instill you with conviction; I have failed to drive home the point made long ago. The dragons are no good and will drive the world to extinction." "I regret a fight, but I will NOT allow you to do this." Combat, probably, with the Servitor. Do not let up.Kilith needs to yeet himself into the caldera for the heart to activate. There is a sudden flash of crimson light from the caldera and Kilith vanishes. Kilith finds himself in a dome made of craggy rock. Red light creeps through the cracks in the stone dimly illuminating a spear stabbed into the ground at the center. He can't shake the feeling of being watched. The spear, both haft and tip, is a dark metal with swirls of red originating from the tip. It's Vira's spear, but you know, composed of a different material. It's very hot to the touch. Once Kilith grabs it and pulls it out of the earthen tablet it's impaled, it shatters into ash. The broken fragments begins mending in a swirl of brownish-red and blue-violet. Once the seal is fixed, there's a definitive pop of magical pressure and the top of the dome cracks open. The dim light from teh cracks flares to flames and rush to the opening, swirling to take the shape of a phoenix. It gives what could be interpreted as a thankful gesture. The phoenix flies up and away, leaving Kilith in utter darkness. And then, the heat rises to an unbearable temperature. There's a gravely grumbling as embers from Ild's mouth illuminates the area, face to face with Kilth. The odor of sulfur and pumice surrounds a red dragon, whose swept-back horns and spinal frill define its silhouette. Its beaked snout vents smoke at all times, and its eyes dance with flame when it is angry. Its wings are the longest of any chromatic dragon, and have a blue-black tint along the trailing edge that resembles metal burned blue by fire. His scales are a dull, deep red and as thick and strong as any metal. His pupils resemble molten lava orbs. "You have relieved me of my torment and restored my heart. You have my thanks, Faithful." who are you? "Hrmph! You know not? I am Ild, the very Flames of the World, the Forger and Shaper, and I would have the World change and evolve, creating better and more wonderous things." where are you from? "Hrmmm. From? I am. And have been for all 250 years the world has existed!" what's the goal? "I intend to not die a second time. Would you assist me? Become my champion and burn Vira's ilk to less than ash? And once vengeance is settled, there is perpetual work to do in reshaping the lackluster." Ild takes a claw and stabs Kilith in the heart, then exhales gouts of flames that envelope and sear him. It's absolutely agonizing. Ild removes his claw and the flames pour into the wound, warping him, forging him into something new. A red dragonborn, with some scales a charred color patterned in the mark of Ild, wrapping from chest to back. It's not a perfectly shaped mark, but it is definitely recognizable. The pain is immense and right as you get a second to breathe, you pass out.
There is a deep rumbling, shaking the earth beneath your feet. Red light grows quickly from the caldera. The stone around the obsidian skull and its gate cracks apart as the skull begins to rise. Around the caldera are similar cracks and rumbling as more obsidian bones begin rising. Heat coalesces, wind suddenly pulling it all into the area centered above the caldera. Ild's body begins to regenerate above them, lava that had been rising being sucked up into the air like a waterfall in reverse. As the vertical pull of lava slows, Kilith wakes, rising up one of the many slabs of earth rising with the lava that begins to spill out over the lip of the caldera. Kilith can feel the presence of chaotic forces, as well as their absences. He knows the location of Ild, and the general direction of any other living dragon. He is immune to fire damage, but vulnerable to cold. Escape time!
