Errant Armadillos

A hardy kind of mammalia you'll find wandering both the warmer parts of temperate forests and plains in The Roamplains and the arid dry lands of Putterheat.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The errant armadillos have bands of hard keratin armor along their back ranging from 3 to 9. They also have tougher skin than the average mammal on the top of their head, arms and legs. This natural armor supplements their seeming natural apptitude with metal and chitin armor. They also have tough feet that allow them to not wear shoes, but many do anyways.

Genetics and Reproduction

Often, after two armadillos of opposite sex agree to a union, they will have kids. After a gestation time of nine months, nearly every armadillo couple has quadruplets. These children are raised and mentored in everything the two parents know for fifteen years before coming of age.
Usually, between twenty and thirty years of age, an armadillo will make their way to the only predominantly armadillo settlement, Dillinton, where the tourney of love is held to help armadillos find mates.

Growth Rate & Stages

Between being born and becoming fifteen, a young armadillo's carapace becomes gradually harder, until it becomes hard enough to deflect even a sword's edge. The common armadillo coming of age ceremony involves a duel between all the siblings, and whomever wins the most matches gets the right of inheritance and territory from their parents. Those winners are known to become great warriors, while the losers may set out to make their own glory, or they may become introverted members of animal communities.

Ecology and Habitats

Armadillos love warm weather, and most will wear warm clothes and armor to feel comfortable, much to the bewilderment of other mammals.

Behaviour

Armadillos seem to have a loner nature. Most every armadillo is able to defend itself upon coming of age and after leaving the safe mentorship of their parents. They enjoy having a great amount of space to themselves and are often introverted. When they do settle down into larger communities, they like living on the outskirts of town, or they become a hermit depending on their temperment.
