Lord Toby Gromwell
Mental characteristics
Lord Toby Gromwell III was born in England to a scandalous couple - a powerful young man and a fretful woman. They were Aemilia Bona and Toby Gromwell II, having met during a stroll through town. They married soon after Toby was born, but their family was scorned for having a child out of wedlock. Both were unsure of their ability to raise a child, and often considered abandoning their son in his early childhood.
Fortunately, after deaths on both sides of their family, they realized they had a responsibility to fulfill. They finally had enough and decided to raise their son, Toby, on a French countryside.
Gromwell II and his wife, Aemilia Gromwell, observed his talents. They found that Toby was quite capable at many things, and sensed a natural leader in him. Toby did not go to a university. Instead, his father paid for a tutor to teach him. Toby learned French and could be caught wordworking in his spare time.
Toby eventually moved back to England in his early 20's. He found a multitude of friends, and made a network of connections during his time there. His career was working at the church as a priest, and as the years trudged on, he found many people with what he described as "sparks". One such "spark" was a woman named Mariana Mortimer. She inspired him, and found that she was especially bright. Her wit surpassed his and he naturally fell in love with her. Their bond was described as "tight and unbreakable".
He began describing a distant island - or a safe haven - to Mariana. He described it as a place where all intelligent people would gather to share their knowledge. They'd be safe from the world's corruption.
Mariana predicted Amitia's downfall nearly a millennia ahead of her time when she posed this question: "How does one guarantee [Amitia] won't suffer the wrath of human greed?"
Mariana was still strongly for Toby's idea. It wasn't much time until they had gathered a band of over 100 people to set sail for this distant island. They dubbed their new country as Amitia, and began to settle down. Toby confessed his love to Mariana. Unfortunately, his love was unrequited. He was still supportive of Mariana and Phoebe's relationship nonetheless.
He lived to see conflicts such as the '72 Flu with Mariana at his side. Their bond went beyond friendship.
Due to his parents' youth when he was born, he was often neglected. Toby experienced his mother and father's doubt as he grew older. Because of this, he was naturally independent and a free spirit. Luckily, his parents supported his beliefs before it was too late.

History
Toby and Marianna met in church one day. Toby vividly remembers the very first time he saw her, and he believed that she was stunning. He was attracted to her, but he had no intention of pursuing her at the time. She matched his intelligence and he found her ideas and philosophies to be inspiring. They met at church every once in a while, until Toby proposed meetings with her under a maple tree. She agreed, as she thought that his personality was fascinating. She enjoyed their friendship, and remembers the day that Toby fell in love with her. She had been wearing a blue dress that day, and as the sun was setting, Toby caught her eye and claims to never have looked at her the same way again.
They shared their deepest and darkest secrets with one another and they were both very respectful of the other person. Mariana strongly supported Toby in each decision he made, and Toby did likewise for Mariana. He taught her many things that Mariana had never known before. She was the first person Toby confessed to about a distant island, which would later hold Amitia.
She stuck by his side on their trip to this island, for she valued his friendship above anything. Even when Mariana confessed that she was gay, he couldn't be angry at her for long. He realized that she was the most important thing in his life, knowing full well that they could never be romantically connected.
