Personal history
It was a storm unlike any the town of Copperholm had seen, the night Helga Stormchild appeared on the beach, a babe, washed up among the ruined timbers, canvas and ropes of a ship wreck.
Braving the storm, townsfolk watching the ship go down, found her, cradled in her mother's arms, both of them barely alive.
Helga and her mother were brought into a shack, given warm blankets and stripped of their sodden clothing. Helga was the first to recover, that night, but it was another day before her mother began to regain consciousness, for a brief moment.
She told the couple, Maurice and Katya Fisher, who had taken her and Helga in, they had fled their home, across the ocean, pursued by enemies.
She recalled how the storm sank their enemies, and then their own ship. other than asking them to look after the infant Helga, she never once said who she was, nor who Helga's father was. she didn't even say the family name, or for what reason they were pursued.
She closed her eyes once more and passed away.
Maurice and Katya gave Helga the name Stormchild, believing the child to have been delivered to them through divine intervention. Little did they know, the tiny, red-headed baby was one of the fabled Heritors.
it wasn't until Helga was six years of age did the first sign of her blood gifts show themselves.
Maurice had taken her into the market with him to help sell the fish from the morning's catch. While making their way down an alleyway, a strong earthquake rocked the town. Around them, masonry tumbled and fell as buildings collapsed. Maurice managed to jump clear of a falling block, and lost sight of Helga. As he lay on the shaking ground, he saw her again, pushing with all her might, against a toppled wall that should have crushed her. Over the sound of breaking stone, he heard Helga scream from the effort as her blood burned, letting her blood gift flow through her, giving her strength. With one final Scream, Helga threw the section of wall several feet, before she collapsed from exhaustion.
once the ground stopped moving, Maurice ran to the girl, finding her covered in dust, and unconscious, but otherwise unharmed.
Several times in the years after, Helga's blood gifts presented themselves. Divine strength was not the only gift she had. Helping Maurice and several other of the local fishermen, out on the water, a Marlin had leapt from the waves, it's long, blade like nose, skewering one of the fishermen. Helga, acting on instinct grabbed the huge fish, hurling it back into the sea, and placing her hands around the dying fisherman's wound. With a scream, as her blood burned, her hand's glowed and the wound on the fisherman began to close.
A year later, when Helga was thirteen, a traveler through the town, having heard of Helga's great feats, came knocking on Maurice and Katya's door. The traveler revealed himself as Ulfric Phinnius, also a Heritor, and the Commander of a Mercenary Company. Helga was excited to meet another Heritor, and was more than eager to take up his offer to take her on as part of his army, to teach her to control her Bloodburn, and what it meant to be a Heritor.
Not ungrateful for everything Maurice and Katya had done for her, Helga did find it hard to say goodbye, promising to return one day.
The years passed by, and Helga became a a soldier, and learned to control her blood gifts. The natural leadership that the Heritor's seemed to possess, allowed Helga to command her own troops on the battlefields, earning a reputation as both a fearsome warrior and reliable commander.
When Helga turned eighteen, Ulfric announced to his army, that he was going to embark on a great quest into the fabled Ghost Archipelago, in search of the crystal pool, he source of all Heritor's power. He recruited volunteers to join his expedition, but asked Helga to remain behind, and to command the army in his absence. That was the last time Helga saw Ulfric.
At twenty-two, having led her army of Mercenaries across several victories, a messenger arrived at their camp. Helga was offered a huge sum of gold for her and her soldiers to aid the battered armies of Ondos, in driving off the invaders of the Monarchy of Ondos.
The army marched south, following the coast, until they arrived at the port town of Magus Port, where they boarded ships to make the final journey to the besieged city.
Upon arrival, Helga and her Mercenaries were tasked with defending a section of the city's southern walls. each and every soldier fought bravely, holding back the enemies of Ondos, waiting for the reformed army of the Princes to arrive.
When the wall was breached, Helga led her troops without fear, pushing their enemies back.
It was a bloody and fierce battle, but they held.
A great cheer went through the city as the Reformed army of the Princes charged the rear of the enemy forces, causing them to break and run.
Helga's soldiers had paid a high price for holding the breach. More than two thirds of her command had been killed. Keeping to their word, the Princes paid Helga and her soldiers handsomely for their help, and offered more if they would help drive the invaders from their land. Politely, Helga declined, her soldiers, and herself exhausted and spent. Instead, her mind drifted to thoughts of her mentor, Ulfric, and his journey to the Ghost Archipelago in search of the crystal pool.
The nigh after the siege was lifted, Helga's dreams were invaded by a shadowy figure, wrapped in black robes, their face hidden in darkness, with only their piercing yellow eyes, burning like coals, visible.
The figure spoke in a strange, hissing, tongue, Helga had never heard before, but some how, in her dreams knew perfectly.
the figure spoke of a a great serpent deity, that had been watching Helga, and wished to offer her a great gift, in the form of untold power, residing in the Ghost Archipelago. immediately, Helga thought of the crystal pool. The figure continued to say, the great serpent would only show her the power, if she proved herself worthy, by passing a series of trials.
the figure placed a parchment in Helga's hand just as she woke up.
Helga was astonished to find the parchment in her hand, as her eyes opened. unrolling it, she saw it was a map, leading to the first steps toward the Trials of the Serpent. Telling her soldiers of her dream, she proposed they embark on a quest, as Ulfric had done, to the Ghosts.
Heading to the Harbour, Helga purchased herself a suitable ship, a Barquentine, she named Tempest, and hired a complement of able sailors to join her. In the days following, as her soldiers and ship's crew loaded up Tempest, Helga discovered word of her expedition had got out, and various mercenaries and soldiers were looking to join in the journey to the Ghosts.
With almost a full crew already, Helga could take on no more than a handful of extra crew. Unbelievably, a young Earth warden approached Helga, offering her expertise, without which Helga could never find the Ghost Archipelago and truly begin her journey.
With her ship fully loaded and all her crew on board, Helga set the sails of Tempest.
