Tarslemoor House
Standing on two rocky outcroppings in the middle of a magical lake, Tarslemoor House is a massive complex with multiple structures, towers, and dungeons below. It's one of the older chapterhouses at the Academy, built over seven hundred years ago. At the time it was the personal quarters of the wizard Tarslemoor, a powerful student of Ioth with a reputation for uninhibited pursuit of magical knowledge, and for jealously guarding secrets. Tarslemoor's fate is mysterious but he left behind an incredibly well equipped facility that was converted into a chapterhouse for a new batch of students.
Purpose / Function
Originally, the Ring was a place for long term, powerful students and patrons of magic to make home for themselves, to share knowledge amongst each other and collaborate. Tarlsemoor built the manor to conduct his own experiments and teach pupils.
After Tarslemoor's disappearance, the Ring was converted into a Chapterhouse for students progressing through their final years of undergraduate study.
Alterations
The crypts beneath the chapterhouse were emptied out when Tarslemoor vanished. The dead bodies stored there for Tarslemoor's experiments were disposed of, his laboratories and libraries completely emptied, the magical auras of the place scrubbed clean. Only the vault at the bottom of the crypt remained relatively intact, and it was sealed with additional abjuration spells and wards of protection.
Architecture
Green roofs, stone buttresses, glass windows and domes or conical towers define the imposing silhouette of Tarslemoor. Though its position on a promontory implies a defensive function, the house was not built to repel a siege. Who's going to besiege you when you're near the heart of Ioth Academy, protected by the Golden Sphere and surrounded by wizards and sorcerers?
Instead, most of the structure was built for form and function, without defensive concerns. It's simple from the outside with a subtle sense of style but not overly ornamental.
History
The wizard Tarslemoor built his home on the ring in 6136, five centuries after Ioth issued a call to the mortal peoples. A human from the distant north, he wanted a place to dwell in relative privacy among his peers, to teach students whose sharp minds and ambition matched his standards, and to pursue his research beyond the prying eyes of others.
Over the years and with help from elemental sculptors he raised up a series of structures, digging down into the rocks and rising upwards, connecting each hall with bridges across the water, culminating in a series of towers and spires for isolated experiments. Tarslemoor was a popular and charismatic figure for those days of the academy.
At nearly a century old, Tarslemoor went missing. The faculty at the time launched an investigation and discovered hidden chambers within the rocks, filled with illicit research. It was many years before they deemed the place safe for student habitation, having magically cleansed it top to bottom and thoroughly examined it for danger and corruption. What befell Tarslemoor remains a mystery, but his home was converted into a Chapterhouse when the teaching process was formalized.
Since then, Tarslemoor has a reputation for being a fine place to live and work, with classrooms and ample facilities on-site.
