The Royal Household
The Royal Household is one of the main units of the The Royal Army of The High Kingdom. It is comprised entirely of lancers, and open only to those of royal blood (although in this day, that is potentially quite a large proportion of the population). The Censor of the Guard is responsible for tracing and affirming the right of those that apply to serve, based on this requirement.
Many of the Household are also knights, and their elan is second to none, although an unbiased observer might claim that the Blue Company are more diligent in their training and possibly more effective as a coherent fighting force.
The Royal Household is as much a social organisation as a military one - much effort is spent on appearance. Maintaining status is a highly competitive and expensive exercise.
Composition
Manpower
The size of the Royal Household is fixed by tradition (and by expense some say) at 500. Competition for places in it is therefore very fierce.
Equipment
The Household wear the finest elven plate, and ride on fully barded horses.
Weaponry
Household lancers are armed with the lance, longsword and longbow, although they emphasis the charge rather than shooting.
Tactics
The Household are not proficient skirmishers, and do not emphasise the use of the bow, rather preferring the charge and melee combat. As a result, they are normally held as the decisive reserve of the army, either to act as the breakthrough unit when a gap or weakness has been created, or to turn the tide if another part of the army is starting to give way.
