Mithrana

Values: Survival
Yearly Events: Lantern Festival, Cherry Blossom Festival, Ancestor's Day
Sites of Interest: The Tangle (a zone of greenery protected by fierce druids, that the city has entirely surrounded)
Inns: The Hag & Tiger, Five Centaurs, Shaniya's Joint, The Animate Lamp

Demographics

The "criminal underground" of the city probably comprises a third or more of its population; crime families run most of the city infrastructure, and in many places, it's easier to get drugs or stolen goods than it is to get a decent meal. The rest of the city runs on trade: Mithrana is central to the whole continent and located on the Andraste River, and huge amounts of legitimate goods also flow through here. In terms of race, the city is unfathomably diverse -- you can find any kind of being here.

Government

Pay-to-play. You can literally buy a seat on The Democra. Individual seats are Democs. The richest and most powerful run the city, literally.

Defences

Overflowed its original walls, but otherwise surrounded by difficult-to-navigate mountains. Mithrana generally depends not on its own defenses but on the fact that Mercurial would be a pain in the ass to invade.

Industry & Trade

SO MUCH. SO SO MUCH. By the river, there are huge amounts of mills and docks, factories and smokestacks, warehouses and slums. Trade comes through north-south by the Imperial roads to Iopetre and Maris, east-west by the Andraste, and less maintained roads to the west to Minerva.

Districts

There are several major districts in Mithrana.

Bevel Park

A primarily industrial area. What population lives there is crammed into small apartments in large buildings. Landmarks include the Animate Lamp (tavern), Audacity Brewing, and the charity hospital run by the Church of Anandaat.

The Blight

Like Bevel Park but much worse. Smoggy and polluted. Includes Dames Island, and the oldest set of docks in the city.

Bywall

This district is in the far east, within the old city walls. It is, quite literally, the area by the walls.

Carlecroft

A town gradually absorbed by Mithrana overflowing its walls.

Castle Hill

The oldest surviving buildings in Mithrana are in the fortress high on the hill next to the North branch of the Andraste. Some people claim that fortress was built as part of the first permanent settlement on this fork of the river.   Either way, the fortress on the hill is now the home of The Democra, the ruling body of the city. Around the fortress, on the high ground, are some of the richest, most high-class neighborhoods in the city. The buildings are small and the rent is extremely high, but the grass is impeccably maintained.   Includes Castle Hill Baths. On the lower side of Castle Hill, where it meets Scholarsville, includes the city government center in Castle Square, which surrounds the Temple of Moribaat: the Courthouse, Hex Headquarters, the Gallows. Nearby is the inn and tavern the Quick Hag.

Crossroads

This technically just refers to the crossroads in the center of the city, but in practice means the neighborhood of the crossroads as well. The Temple of Anandaat, which is a national landmark, occupies the area in the center of the crossroads. Northeast

Guilds and Factions

Representatives of the three major churches of Bel, Ananda, and Morbin are present in the city, as well as a prominent Merchant's Guild.    The Enigma Society works out of a dusty attic space in Scholarsville.    There are several criminal gangs, the most prominent of which are the Armlanders, the Shame of Felgarde, Clamor, and the assassination group, the Order of the Arrow. There is also the recently prominent Waxen Eye, which is known to deal the new drug Sunburn.
