South of Rhean and Mazandaram, and across the narrow Sea of Uluaan, lie four large islands, surrounded by an archipelago of smaller ones. The four main islands in the Taa’ru chain are Xai, Kheleus, Orcan, and Majintessa, each of them hundreds of square miles in area. Of the four, only Majintessa is known to be inhabited by anything other than monsters. The heart of Majintessa contains a region with huge circular stone rings and floating boulders. No one knows who or what formed these features, but they are obviously something fueled by powerful magic.
Majintessa is also home to the most famous pirates in the world. The pirates largely make their living pillaging coastal towns, and raiding Rheanese and Shanite trading ships. They leave the undersea kingdoms alone, often bribing them as an added incentive for noninvolvement. For the most part, the nearby undersea kingdoms of Kodah, Al-Idris, Ter’findran, Ter’ummah, and Ancastor see the Majintessans as a surface problem, and rarely interfere in the pirates' business.
Being closest, Rheanese ships are most at risk from Majintessan pirates. In response, the Rheanese Corsair fleet has often made hunting the pirates a top priority. The island of Majintessa itself is well fortified, making a direct assault difficult and costly. The Rheanese instead work to decimate the Majintessans’ pirate fleet, with little success to date beyond a handful of now legendary sea battles.
