Dragonborn

Dragonborn are, as the name suggests, born of dragons. They are humanoid in body shape, but they have the heads, tails, claws, breath weapons, and scales of dragons. They emerged around the same time as humans, only their elder by a few decades or a century. Hardly an accomplishment, considering that's barely one generation for either race. Unlike in vanilla D&D, they are not uncommon, as they had a massive population explosion shortly after they were first discovered.   Dragonborn are a curiosity for many. They obviously have a great deal in common with dragons, and come in just as many shades and temperaments as the great beings that are obviously their ancestors. They don't have the same "greed" that drives dragons, but do have a similar zeal for life. Even the most melancholy of dragonborn are seldom truly solitary, and they love no company more than that of other dragonkin.   Unlike in vanilla D&D, dragonborn are only able to have ancestry from chromatic dragons. You may not choose a dragonborn of metallic or gem ancestry in this campaign setting.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Dragonborn are humanoid, but with obvious draconic features. Their entire bodies are covered in soft, tough scales, and they have facial features that resemble whatever dragon they are related to. This includes horns and spikes, which can extend further down their body (often on their spine and shoulders, if present.)   Dragonborn do not have tails.

Genetics and Reproduction

Dragonborn can only reproduce with other dragonkin. They are remarkably fertile, and give birth to soft-shelled eggs that incubate an additional month or so before "hatching" a fully formed dragonborn child roughly three human years in development.

Growth Rate & Stages

Dragonborn mature very quickly. They are "born" at the development equivalent of three human years old, and reach fully physical and emotional maturity by 14. They live roughly the same time as halflings, but it is less unlikely that a dragonborn could live to see 100.

Civilization and Culture

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Dragonborn have no historical culture of their own. They often try to assimilate into whatever culture is around them.   Some dragonborn have attempted to establish their own states and cultures, however, and the player is open to invent some if they would like.

History

Dragonborn emerged from eggs first, this much is known. Many now believe they were a created race, but their origins remain unknown. The first recordings of dragonborn hatchlings were from a clutch of eggs believed to be orphaned. At first believed to be some freak accident, word quickly spread of at least a dozen other supposedly orphaned clutches also hatching the new humanoid infants.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Dragonborn have a reverence and respect for dragons, and many will not willingly take up arms against a dragon without very good reason.

Draconic Resistance. You have resistance to the damage type associated with your draconic ancestry.   Draconic Ancestry. You have chromatic draconic ancestry. Choose one type of chromatic dragon from the Draconic Ancestry table. Your breath weapon and damage resistance are determined by the dragon type, as shown in the table.   Breath Weapon. You can use your action to exhale destructive energy. Your draconic ancestry determines the size, shape, and damage type of the exhalation. When you use your breath weapon, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your draconic ancestry. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 16th level.   You can use your breath weapon a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

Languages. You speak the language of your culture, and can innately understand spoken Draconic, if you focus on the words. You still must learn to speak Draconic, however.
