Plains Elves
Though they are known colloquially as "high elves," the true name for the smaller subspecies of elf is "plains elves," or "plain elves." They have a greater affinity for magic than wood elves, but a lower affinity than mountain elves. They are often the elves found at the head of elven empires and armies, not because they are inherently superior, but because they tend to believe they are.
The easiest way to tell a plains elf from other elves is their ears. Plains elves are, ironically enough, lower on the head and downturned at the tips (see Selanar for an example of "ideal" plains elf ears). Their eyes generally come in pale colors such as gold, silver, or blue.
Naming Traditions
Unisex names
All plains elf names are technically unisex. True given names are long and have poetic meanings. Some first names are whole poems, but an individual will often choose one word or phrase to use as their name in every day life. Very rarely will an elf translate their name into Common or any other language, unless they have been raised in a culture besides Elven.
Family names
Family names are generally spoken in Elvish and rarely translated. They are usually a combination of descriptive words or nouns that supposedly describe the origins of the family.
