When the 'Ancient Ones' dominated Tamerea they developed a spell/ritual that could physically combine two creatures into one new creature, creating artificial Chimeras. Using this spell the A.O.'s created Centaurs, Fauns, Harpies, Merfolk, etc.
This spell was used to create specialized slaves and punish law breakers. When the magic levels crashed it became impossible to create more chimeras, and the knowledge of how to perform the spell was eventually forgotten. In modern times the 'Descendents' have relearned this spell, and have begun to create chimeras of their own.
