Aberrant Runes, The

The Aberrant Runes are a widespread criminal organization that shuttles illicit magical substances, as well as unregulated and black market arcane artifacts, throughout Sheanora. With agents and runners in almost every major city, it is perhaps the most powerful syndicate of its type on the northern continent and holds untold influence over governments, businesses and even academia.
Lorded over by the mysterious Volto, Runic agents infiltrate the halls of power, living elaborate double lives, sometimes going years between jobs. Beyond this criminal activity, the Runes also maintain a large archaeological team that scours dig sites around the world, delving into the deep recesses of the ancient ruins that litter the countryside. This patient approach has allowed them access to extremely rare materials - even those thought to be a myth. As such, there are some who say that Volto knows the gods better than any high priest. 
Most members of the Aberrant Runes are rogue magicians, priests and enchanters who chose to step away from rigid formal study out of disillusionment. Volto encourages exploration into magical arts that are forbidden to those on the outside and he will gladly fund research that he believes will grow the influence of the organization (though even he draws the line at necromancy). The academic knowledge that this approach inspires is rivaled only by older and more respected institutions like the Revenark University of the Arcane, the College of Garlrun and the Church of the Eternal Court.  
The Runes operate the business end of their organization out of a mysterious nightclub called The Masquerade, which seems to shift location every night. Those who pay close attention will notice a pattern that reveals on which dates The Masquerade will appear in their city, providing them access to Volto's wares, as well as the best party in Aorna. When entering the club, members wear thick marble masks, often covered in elaborate gemstone patterns. These masks, along with their distinct codenames, help them to hide their identity and operate with impunity on the outside. The atmosphere of celebration allows for important conversations to happen without being overheard, but on a more fundamental level, satiates the Aberrant Runes' need to "find joy in magic".   
They are perhaps the most hunted syndicate on the planet, with every major nation dedicating resources to finding and stopping their operations.
