Daeos, The Fleeting Eternity

Daeos, The Fleeting Eternity, is the god of time who silently watches the universe from afar, chronicling every moment in explicit detail and ensuring that time pushes forward, unbroken. He is an enigma, not just to the mortals of Aorna, but to the rest of the Eternal Court as well.   This is largely due to his isolation. Daeos is the only god who never once stepped foot on Aorna and never participated in any of the many conflicts that occurred there. In fact, few of his brethren have ever even met him. He prefers to remain within the walls of the Clockwork Citadel in Parendia - the realm of order - observing and waiting, for he is endlessly patient. It is said that he can see through every eye in the world.   Beyond this, Daeos' origins are hotly debated. He appeared without notice and without the formal birth of the other gods. No religious text depicts this event. There are some who believe that Daeos was once an angel of Parendia, who transcended his role and ascended to godhood by taking loose fragments of time and ordering them together to be experienced in sequence. Others claim he is a lost child of Ausalai, The First Seed and Estus, The Purifying Light, though there is little evidence for this. Perhaps the most sensational claim is that The Fleeting Eternity is an avatar of The Dreaming God. This would explain how he could simultaneously exist from the beginning of time, while also seeming to appear after many of his brethren had already established themselves.   Daeos is considered the only truly neutral party in the Eternal Court, because of his isolation, but also because there are few things more fair in the universe than time itself. For this reason, Daeos has taken on a secondary role as the Judge of Souls. When a soul is ready to move onto the afterlife, they are greeted by Thelena, The Inevitable Embrace, who proceeds to take them before The Fleeting Eternity. Daeos reviews their lives in full detail, determining which afterlife would best suit them. Some are bound to the gods they followed, others travel outside of the dream to the Veiled Havens, and still others return to Aorna to live another life.   Because of this perceived neutrality, Daeos has no church of his own, no priesthood and no defined group of followers - as this could lead to a bias towards those souls who choose to worship him. However, this only adds to his mystery - as most of the gods accept that their power is derived entirely from the belief of the peoples' of Aorna. Daeos should not exist, at least not at the level of influence he appears to wield.    Regardless, as long as time has turned, Daeos has watched. As he continues to.

Holy Books & Codes

  • The Prophecies of a Fleeting Eternity: An exceedingly rare text, believed to have been written by Daeos himself, The Prophecies are a complete, detailed catalog of everything that has happened, everything that is happening, and everything that will happen. It is a dense text that is nearly impossible to read, as it constantly changes language and perspective. For example, the depiction of a battle might contain the individual recollections of all 10,000 soldiers who participated in it. Specific information is often difficult to discern, as it is wrapped in cryptic metaphor and interpretation. Perhaps most important, the section of the book that deals in potential futures has been known to overwhelm the mind, driving the reader insane or erasing their memories entirely. As such, it is considered one of the most dangerous books in religious canon and the few copies that still exist remain locked away in secure locations. Not even Daeos' own priests use The Prophecies as a true religious text.
  • Through the Havens: Though this book is mostly used by followers of Thelena, The Inevitable Embrace, Through the Havens contains many of the most notable passages about Daeos in a religious context. This is due to his role as the neutral judge of souls in the afterlife. Scholars curious about Daeos pour through these texts looking for even the slightest bit of new information about the most mysterious of the gods.

Tenets of Faith

It is unknown if there are official tenants to the faith of Daeos, as there is no active church to preach these tenants.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

  • To chronicle the history of the universe.
  • To ensure that time continues its inevitable march forward.
  • To confront magic that could bend the laws of time.
  • To act as a neutral judge in matters of cosmic importance, including the distribution of souls in the afterlife.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Daeos' true appearance is largely a mystery, as so few in the universe have ever encountered him - and because he is not actively worshipped, he is rarely depicted in statues or relief paintings.    However, it is accepted that The Fleeting Eternity often appears in the form of a being in a flowing robe, dotted with shimmering glints of purple sand - often believe to be the first to have eroded from the shores of the Merchant Sea. This being, often human or elf-like in form, ages quickly, transforming from a child, to an adult, to an old man, and to a decrepit corpse, eventually shattering into a pile of sand on the ground. He often blinks in and out of existence, believed to be a symptom of his unfolding across all of space and time.
