Elzias Varsalo
The senior ranking military mind in Aracia, General Elzias Varsalo is also one of the few officers serving that did not participate in the Infernal Wars. He is in his early forties and made his name in East Aracia, defending Vestadonia from incursions along its border with the Battlehaunt.
Elzias believes that Rodrigo Salemanco’s plan to transition to democracy could prevent them from being able to move quickly against rivals and opponents who could use the transition to marshal power. He has made this skepticism known to Rodrigo, but respects the Sovereign Prince and his principles well enough to follow through with his orders.
After the Xavast Crusade's attempted invasion of Riocruce, the General believed that Rodrigo was not taking the threat seriously enough. However, once the Sovereign Prince went missing, he moved to lock down Nansuelo and cease communication with the outside until a proper line of succession could be drawn. He assumed complete control of the city, believing that Ernesto Salemanco was attempting a coup from within.
However, this assumption was called to question when he received a message from a band of intrepid adventurers, identifying his old friend and compatriot Giancalo Salemanco as the organizer of the attack on Riocruce. Despite his reservations, Varsalo opened the gates of Nansuelo to Ernesto and Mazira, as well as refugees from Riocruce and Icharyd. He asked the adventurers to seek out Rodrigo and return him to the throne.
General Varsalo led the defense of Nansuelo when Giancalo's forces aimed to take the capital. He marshalled every resource available to him, and even that was nearly not enough. He had to rely on the dragon Mazira to intervene, a source of tension between them. The victory was short won and Varsalo remains concerned that Giancalo could return with stronger reinforcements.
Upon Rodrigo's return, the General began drawing up plans to draw Giancalo's forces out for a final confrontation.
