Pitka, the Jewel of the Coast

Sailors, captains, and all those who make their wages from the sea are known to be superstitious by nature: departing at a certain time, eating the same meal before embarking, wearing one’s lucky boots; the list of beliefs runs long. Yet among them is one that is especially curious. If one was to look at the crow’s nest of some ships, particularly those owned or sailed by families that still remember the old ways of Rrinnoroth, one might see…a fish. Not a small trout or guppy but a proper offering, fastened to the highest point of the ship where no one below could reach. This offering is not intended for anyone who walks the land, instead it is meant for she who rules the coastal skies of Rrinnoroth: Pitka the Thunderbird, Jewel of the Coast. For centuries, seafarers have told tales of Pitka, the black, white and sky blue protector of the skies. Silently she glides along the coast, paying close watch to those who travel her domain. Great rolling storms full of lightning and thunder are said to appear in her wake, materializing out of nowhere, seeking out vessels of the greedy and corrupt. Pitka is an intelligent and wise thunderbird, and has long since entered into an accord with the seafarers. A tasty fish, tied to the crow’s nest, assures that Pitka stays well fed and can continue her duty. It is also a promise that said vessel will treat its crew and fellow sailors justly, lest they bring down the wrath of the thunderbird.
