A knight errant is a merging of the cavalier and bard. The name is often interchanged as a knight or cavalryman.
Career
Qualifications
Training in the martial arts and the art of the horse. They aren't as disciplined as a Paladin, or pledged to any specific Church. Part of their training is often to create and perform their own ballads.
Career Progression
Cavaliers often begin their training as a page, then a squire, afterward they must prove themselves to be raised to a knight/cavalier.
Payment & Reimbursement
This depends on what type of cavalier they are and their oath. If they sign on to a liege lord or a company, then they are paid and outfitted by them, otherwise, they have to outfit themselves.
Other Benefits
Again this depends on their employer, his fame or infamy, and how wealthy they are. They are given room, board, training, equipment, and a salary.

For many lords, cavaliers are the backbone of their army. They are used as shock troops, leaders, and messengers (the less well-trained among them).
