The Fire Reef of Volcanus

The fire reef around the continent of Volcanus is an astonishing wonder to behold. It lights up the ocean around it with a fiery light and heat.  The Fire Reef can be seen for miles around. It is a common destination for those who want to see natural wonders. 

Geography

This reef is a barrier across the western side of the continent. It blocks access to and from the sea on that side, the tide level rarely goes low enough for the reef to be exposed to the open air. This barrier reef runs the full western coast of Volcanus, to the south part of it curves to cover part of Teranik as well.

Ecosystem

The environment is similar to a volcanic vent or smoker, but without the pollution that they exude.

Localized Phenomena

The combination of heat and cold in the area can birth waterspouts and hurricanes.

Fauna & Flora

Many flora and fauna use the reef for shelter from predators, as well as for heat against the cold ocean.

History

The creation of the reef harkens back to when the fire elementals first arrived on Volcanus. Radiation from the Plane of Fire caused the mutation of the fire coral, this is what altered to coral reef.

Tourism

As they get older many Seafolk Society, especially those with aching joints come to enjoy the luxury of being able to alternate between hot and cold water. The stinging sensation of the Fire Coral even helps the aching and inflammation of joints they are plagued with.  There are often therapeutic colonies near the location of the fire reef, some of the coral has also been taken elsewhere to start new ones nearer to where they are needed.
