Wadi Talavera

Imagine yourself cresting a hill, as you look below, an oasis appears out of the heat haze. The relentless sun is beating down, it is nestled amidst rugged hills and desert dunes. You see a cluster of palm trees, their fronds swaying gently in the breeze. This is Wadi Talavera, a secret oasis where life thrives amidst the arid dunes.   There is a clear, freshwater spring bubbling up from the heart of the Oasis, forming a small, turquoise pool. The trickling water is a constant melody adding to the tranquility of this peaceful refuge.

Geography

The Oasis is located in the hills and scrublands on the border of the Brontosaurus homelands, the Northern Raptors,  and the Fringe Outcasts area. It is to the Northwest of Creatopia in an area where few people live.   After a sudden earthquake, a crack in the bedrock allowed an underground spring bubble up to the surface and formed a pool. Plants in the area were able to take advantage of the new water.    A lone wanderer stumbled upon the valley, her name is Amara Talavera. She was born in Petatopia a city near the northwestern coast. Following rumors of an oasis in this parched land, she finally found it.    Some Dinoterran, Saurian have suggested that this oasis changes location, but this hasn't been observed.    Amara built a small hut near the water, then traveled to nearby locations, gathering plants, animals, seeds, etc. to improve the surrounding area. She created a refuge for herself and anyone she invited to live here with her.    Almost a year later a caravan happened by with some young humans as well as saurians. She convinced some of the humans to stay, and sent a message with the saurians to send a message to her family and friends to collect an colony expedition.    While waiting for them to arrive, some Outsiders happened by and decided to stay as well. When everyone arrived, they set about organizing the colony, building infrastructure, housing, agriculture, etc.

Ecosystem

Before the water came, the area was dry with little rainfall, or visible ground water. Most of the plants that lived here were able to survive with little water. Some grew deep roots, others stored water in their root bulbs. Afterwards, all plants within 100 yards have begun to flourish.

Climate

The new spring that formed the oasis, has changed the climate in this locale.

Fauna & Flora

Many animals have sensed the water, and have begun to visit the oasis. Plants that travel on the wind have "migrated" as well.

Natural Resources

Many plants live here including:
  • date palms: for shade, food, and building materials.
  • apricot: provides shade, beauty, and delious produce; but needs careful irrigation.
  • mesquite: for shade, food, and nitrogen fixation.
  • desert willows: are good for medicine, food, shade, windbreaks, attracting pollinators and wildlife, building materials, etc
  • prickly pear cactus: food, medicine, water source, animal feed, soil stabilization, natural barriers, dye production.
  • creeping thyme: culinary flavoring and tea, medicinal, ground cover, erosion control, pollinator attraction, pest repellent.
  • butterfly milkweed: pollinator support, garden aesthetic, medicine, erosion control, insect attraction and control.
