Beris
Hw. Beris Bigmoor
Hw. Beris is a Hallow of Brigantia.
Beris was a Half-Orc who, following an undistinguished military career where he was never truly accepted, decided to turn to farming. As a part of his rights as a member of the King's Army, he was entitled to an acre of farmland upon his retirement. However, his superiors as a final insult chose to give him a patch of swamp as his pension. Unwilling to give them the satisfaction of a response, Beris accepted it graciously.
Through careful study, knowledge of crops and hard graft, Beris managed to turn the swampland into a productive farm. He invented swamp shoes. The people from nearby began to believe he was touched by the Goddess Brigantia for having performed such a miracle with awful land. This irritated Beris - he felt people should rely less on miracles and more on sensible choices and hard work.
Despite this, the cult around him grew and people from far and wide began to flock to see the miracle land. This quite irritated Beris as before, though it did boost the selling price of his crops which somewhat compensated for the inconvenience.
This all attracted the attention of the Goddess Brigantia. Impressed by his devotion to the land and to proper labour. As a boon, she gifted him a staff with unknown powers of controlling plants. This REALLY irritated him as he 'Didn't need no bloody miracles.' He attached a spade-head to it and used it to dig holes.
He is known for the advice he tried to give to those who came to him seeking counsel. Whilst he tried to give practical information, many interpreted his literal phases as deep religious metaphor.
His former farm is now home to a temple, in Vilmarsh, Dolon. This is the temple of Hw. Beris-in-the-Swamp.
