Jergal (Jer-gal)

Overview

Son of Cehbris, Jergal serves under his father and is unfeeling and excessively formal, he never angers and simply works for all eternity. He cares little for anything besides an orderly accounting of the fate of the world as it slowly sinks into death, and he is said to keep the disposition and locations of the souls of all who have died. His herald is The Scribe of Inevitability, a gaunt and skeletal psychopomp. Reflecting Jergal's nature, the Scribe of Inevitability is cold, methodical, and unfeeling. It speaks rarely, and when it does, its voice is an emotionless, echoing whisper. If a person is not meant to be revived or raised from the dead, the Scribe of Inevitability can seal the person's soul and make it impossible to come back.

Portfolio and Responsibilities

He is a god whose portfolio includes records of the dead, the afterlife, fatalism, and tomb guardians. In ethos, Jergal is colder and more inhumane than his father, sanctioning the use and creation of undead (although never intelligent ones) by his followers, provided they serve the cause of advancing death in the world, a fact that his father despises but puts up with in some regards. He is not evil or malicious, but impassively records the death of all things. The church of Jergal is small and secretive, rigidly organized, almost monastic order of scribes known as the Scriveners of Doom. Based largely in lifeless stone mausoleums and dry, dusty crypts, its members spend their days maintaining and extending vast archives of scrolls listing how sentients under their purview passed away and their destination in the afterlife.

Example Paladin Code

Under the impartial gaze of Jergal, Keeper of the Endings, I solemnly swear to preserve the record, to be a sentinel of finality, and to ensure the cosmic balance is undisturbed. My actions shall be a reflection of his meticulous nature:
  • Every life has a beginning and an end, and it is my sacred duty to record each soul's departure. I will diligently scribe the circumstances of each passing, ensuring that no life's ending is forgotten.
  • Death is the grand equalizer, and I accept its inevitability without sentiment. My emotions will not sway me. I serve the balance, ensuring that each ending is just another entry in the grand archive of existence.
  • The undead, tools in service of the balance, shall be wielded judiciously. I sanction the creation of undead to further the causes of order, balance, and the advancement of life's end, abiding by the constraints of respect and purpose. These beings shall be instruments, never permitted consciousness or suffering, ensuring they do not disrupt the sacred balance.
  • In all actions, I am the embodiment of detachment and neutrality. I will not let personal emotions, biases, or sentiments interfere with my duties.
