Sapient Machine

While it would occur that sometimes one would find in one settlement or another an automaton in the service of one group or another, it is even known that some have them in service to keep the peace. Most only know of the ones of strange and dangerous behavior that come in from the wilds causing chaos and mischief. Adventurers and explorers brought tales of ones bearing greater, sometimes even godlike intelligence, but those were always the stuff of myth and legend.
In recent decades, however, different types have begun to show up. Machines shaped like more or less like civil races, and likewise equipped with the capacity for thought and reason. Beholden to no one but their own curiosity and will, these automatons would travel by, and sometimes, if they found a reception friendly enough, they would stay. Sapiant machines are still rare, but one might see one working within a city guard, or with a local smith, or, as likely most often the case, serving with explorers and adventurers.  
These machines have in curiosity common among them, but they are neither manic no foolish in their pursuits. More often than not they act with caution and reserve, though of course exceptions do exist.

Civilization and Culture

History

If asked the sapient machines will say they come from a place called Baz, though none will volunteer it's location willingly. Some know it as a secluded land in the Khala Ridge mountains in Falen, and a few might know of the dangers of traveling there. It is a land of machines who have fled the organic world and do not take kindly to organic outsiders.  
As to why the reclusive nation of machines would suddenly begin to send, or at least let leave, a number of their kind is strange to some and suspicious to others. But as the saying goes, "There are worse things in the wilds, and if you look hard enough, you will find them."
