Dûren
Dûren is a tranquil nation located in the southern reaches of the continent of Aranath. Known for its rolling, wide hills and open landscapes, Dûren is one of the safest regions in the south. Unlike many of its neighbors, which are characterized by dense forests, rugged mountains, and dark caves, Dûren's geography is relatively free of such dangers. This absence of dense cover makes it difficult for monsters, bandits, or marauding armies to hide and launch ambushes, creating a sense of security and stability across the land. As a result, the nation has long enjoyed a peaceful existence, with most of its settlements and farms lacking the defensive walls and palisades that are commonplace in other parts of Aranath.
Landscape and Safety
The landscape of Dûren is one of its most defining features. The country is mostly made up of vast, open hills that stretch across the horizon, with only a few sparse woods scattered throughout the land. The scarcity of forests and caves is what sets Dûren apart from other nations. While the lack of cover can be seen as a disadvantage during times of war, it has worked to Dûren's benefit in maintaining internal safety. The few monsters that roam Aranath rarely find refuge in Dûren, and bandits have little opportunity to hide, making attacks on villages and travelers uncommon.
The lack of natural hiding places has also contributed to the absence of large, threatening monster populations that plague other countries. Unlike the heavily forested Kaelderen or Modren, where monsters thrive, Dûren's geography makes it difficult for these creatures to establish themselves. This relative peace has allowed Dûren to flourish without the constant fear of attacks from both nature and men.
Agriculture and Daily Life
The peaceful landscape of Dûren has given rise to a society focused on farming, and agriculture is the backbone of the nation’s economy. The Dûrians have mastered the cultivation of wheat, making it one of their primary exports. The wide, fertile fields yield rich harvests, and the people of Dûren enjoy prosperous lives built around their farming communities.
In addition to wheat, Dûren is known for producing luxurious goods, most notably the renowned honey from the region of Sweetwater. This honey is prized throughout Aranath for its exquisite taste and unique qualities, bringing additional wealth and recognition to the nation. Durian farmers take great pride in their craft, and the cultivation of these fine products has allowed them to live comfortably, far removed from the strife and hardship that often befalls other countries.
Life in Dûren is often described as pleasant and harmonious. Without the constant threat of war or monster attacks, the civilians are free to focus on their families, livelihoods, and enjoying the simple pleasures of life. Festivals celebrating the harvest, local craftsmanship, and cultural traditions are common, bringing the communities together. Dûren’s people are known for their warm hospitality and their pride in the beauty of their land.
The Submission to the Empire
Despite its long-standing peace, Dûren's idyllic existence was threatened when the Empire launched its aggressive campaign to conquer the independent nations of southern Aranath. While nations like Kaelderen and Modren put up fierce resistance, Dûren found itself in a precarious situation. The then-reigning king, Corax Ravencrest, was inexperienced in matters of war, having never faced a serious conflict during his lifetime. The kingdom's small standing army, accustomed to dealing with only minor skirmishes and protecting against the occasional monster, was ill-prepared to face the might of the Empire's legions.
When the Empire’s forces crossed the border, King Corax was faced with a difficult decision. Rather than sacrifice his soldiers in a futile battle, Corax chose to submit to the Empire, thus making Dûren a vassal state. In return for his submission, Corax was allowed to retain his title, though he now rules not as a king, but as a duke under the Empire’s control.
This decision, while sparing Dûren from the devastation of war, has left a lasting stain on Corax’s reputation. Many Dûrian civilians view their ruler as a coward who abandoned the nation’s independence. Whispers of discontent are common in taverns and village gatherings, where many speak openly of their disappointment in Corax’s leadership. Though the quality of life for most Dûrians has not dramatically changed under imperial rule, this underlying bitterness and resentment lingers, particularly among the common folk who still yearn for the days of Dûren’s sovereignty.
Political Unrest
While the everyday lives of the Dûrian people have remained relatively stable since becoming a vassal state, the nobility is divided on Corax Ravencrest's decision to submit to the Empire. Some members of the aristocracy quietly support Corax, believing that his actions saved Dûren from destruction, while others see him as weak and unworthy of leadership. Among the discontented nobles, rumors of plots to overthrow Corax have begun to circulate.
There are those within the aristocracy who dream of returning Dûren to its former status as an independent nation, free from the Empire’s influence. These factions have begun to conspire in secret, hoping to find a way to depose Corax and restore the country’s autonomy. While no overt rebellion has yet taken place, the political landscape of Dûren has become increasingly unstable, with tensions between the loyalists and dissenters threatening to erupt into open conflict.
The Duchy of Dûren Under Imperial Rule
As a vassal state of the Empire, Dûren is now ruled by Duke Corax Ravencrest under the supervision of imperial officials. While Corax retains much of his power in name, the true authority in the duchy belongs to the Empire. Taxes have increased, with much of the nation’s wealth now funneled to support the Empire’s military ambitions.
The imperial presence has grown in the country, with garrisons stationed in key cities and towns to ensure the Empire's hold remains firm. While the Dûrians still have some autonomy in their day-to-day affairs, the looming shadow of imperial control is ever-present. Imperial decrees must be obeyed, and any resistance to the Empire’s rule is swiftly and harshly punished.
For many Dûrians, the submission to the Empire has brought a sense of resignation. Though life remains peaceful on the surface, there is an undercurrent of dissatisfaction. The fields still yield abundant harvests, the honey of Sweetwater continues to flow, but the people are restless, longing for a time when they were truly free. The duchy may be safe, but it is no longer sovereign.
A Land at a Crossroads
Dûren stands at a crossroads. It is a nation that has long enjoyed peace and prosperity, protected by its geography and the hard work of its people. But the decision to submit to the Empire has left the country divided, with its people torn between gratitude for the avoidance of war and anger over the loss of independence.
For now, the fields of Dûren remain quiet, the hills serene. But beneath the surface, political unrest brews. The question that hangs over the nation is whether Dûren will continue to endure as a loyal vassal of the Empire, or if the seeds of rebellion will grow and force the nation onto a new and uncertain path.
