Gorn Ironbeard
Personal History
Gorn Ironbeard’s life has been shaped by the grit and determination required of an Idwala miner. For decades, he worked tirelessly in the deep tunnels beneath the city, driven by his love for unearthing rare minerals and gems. Mining was in his blood, passed down through generations of Ironbeards, and Gorn took pride in his work, digging deeper than most dared venture. When the city shifted its focus away from mining toward education and commerce, Gorn chose not to follow the tide. Instead, he retired and poured his savings into the Pick and Pint, establishing it as a safe haven for miners and those who worked the depths of Idwala. Although the city’s mining era has dwindled, Gorn still holds out hope that he’ll find a way back underground one day.
Physical Descriptions
Appearance & Attire
Gorn is a stout, solidly built dwarf with thick muscles earned from years of hard labor in the mines. His wiry beard, a mix of iron-grey and black, falls over his broad chest, and his green, beady eyes are sharp and observant. Gorn’s attire reflects his practical nature—he wears a heavy leather apron passed down from his father, a blacksmith, over a simple brown shirt and thick-weave overalls. His steel-capped boots have seen years of wear and are still sturdy enough to face the roughest terrain.
Concealed Items
Within his leather apron, Gorn keeps a small miner’s chisel and an old locket containing a piece of ore from his last mining expedition. Hidden in his private quarters, he has a set of vintage mining maps detailing some of Idwala’s old, uncharted tunnels, which he occasionally studies in hopes of finding a path back underground. What do they sound like
Gorn’s voice is deep, and gravelly, and carries the weight of years spent in the mines. He speaks in a low rumble, punctuated with short, hearty laughs when sharing stories of his time underground. His tone shifts to one of caution when talking to newcomers, particularly those associated with Idwala’s criminal underworld.
Social
Motivations
Gorn’s main motivation is to preserve the legacy of Idwala’s mining era. Although the city’s focus has shifted, Gorn is dedicated to keeping the spirit of the miners alive through the Pick and Pint. He secretly longs to reopen a small mining shaft for himself, seeking the thrill of discovery once more. He is also motivated by loyalty to his regular patrons, many of whom are former miners or part of the city’s underworld.
Personality Traits
Gorn is gritty, practical, and fiercely loyal to his patrons and friends. He has a deep-seated respect for hard work and values honesty above all. He’s also a storyteller, happily sharing tales of the old mining days with anyone who’ll listen, though he can be wary of strangers. He has a strong sense of tradition and is reluctant to embrace Idwala’s new, academic-focused era.
Flaws
Gorn can be stubborn and resistant to change, often clinging to the past. His loyalty to his patrons sometimes blinds him to the darker activities they bring into the Pick and Pint. Gorn’s desire to return to the mines can also make him reckless, and he occasionally becomes withdrawn, and fixated on the uncharted mining maps he keeps hidden.
Ideals
Gorn values tradition, community, and loyalty. He believes that the city of Idwala should honour its roots and respect the sacrifices of its miners. Gorn’s ideal world is one where mining and academia coexist, and where the spirit of exploration lives on, both above and below the city’s surface.
