Grundrimm

History & Introduction

Nestled deep within the mountain heart of Ogra'Soren, the Dwarven capital city, Grundrimm is more than a vault—it is a fortress of wealth, legacy, and powerful artifacts guarded fiercely by the dwarves of the Grungerheld clan. Established centuries ago to protect the combined riches of dwarven nobility, merchants, and renowned warriors, Grundrimm is an interconnected vault system renowned for its unmatched security and ancient protective runes.   The Grungerheld clan, known for their unwavering loyalty and mastery of metallurgy and runecraft, oversees the operation of Grundrimm, maintaining an unbreakable oath to protect its treasures. Many secrets surround the history of the vault, including the whispered tale that Grundrimm was once a temple to an ancient dwarven god of fortune and stone, later repurposed into its current role. Over generations, it has been fortified, expanded, and layered with magical defenses, making it the most trusted depository in all dwarven realms.

Physical Description

External

From the outside, Grundrimm appears as a massive, unyielding stone structure, blending seamlessly with the surrounding rocky landscape of Ogra'Soren’s cavernous mountains. The primary entrance is an imposing iron-bound door, flanked by carved statues of ancient dwarven warriors who appear to stand eternal vigil. The outer walls are thick, reinforced with iron and adamantine to ensure no force can breach them, even the marks of time. The entrance is further fortified by a series of intricate runes, which glow faintly when intruders or magical energies approach.   Alongside the entrance runs a steep drop, adding a natural deterrent, and the paths leading to Grundrimm are guarded heavily by dwarven sentries, each one sworn to the Grungerheld clan. The exterior remains unadorned by excess but conveys a sense of immense weight and power, a testament to dwarven craftsmanship and purpose.

Internal

Inside, Grundrimm is a complex series of vaults, each connected by stone corridors and staircases that wind deeper into the mountain. The walls within are carved with age-old dwarven runes of protection and wealth, while sconces on every wall hold enchanted lanterns, casting an amber glow. Each vault is secured by a massive, intricately crafted door made of reinforced metals with unique locking mechanisms known only to select members of the Grungerheld.   The innermost chamber, often referred to as The Heart of Grundrimm, is the central repository for the rarest artifacts and valuables. In this space, a massive vault door adorned with Grungerheld’s emblem leads into a chamber covered in masterfully crafted mosaics depicting ancient dwarven legends. It is rumoured that several enchanted golems patrol this chamber, and only a handful of Grungerheld’s inner circle know how to pass through unnoticed.

Auditory cues

The sounds within Grundrimm are muted, as if the stone itself absorbs sound to maintain the vault's secrecy and serenity. Faint echoes of heavy footsteps from patrolling guards occasionally reverberate through the halls. If one listens closely, a soft hum can be heard—an enchantment woven into the very stone, alerting the Grungerheld clan to any breaches or disturbances. The low murmur of distant forges from Ogra'Soren’s depths filters through occasionally, reminding all within of the dwarven city's industrious heart.

Scents

Grundrimm carries a mix of earthen scents: the faint, metallic tang of iron and stone dust, mingled with a hint of ancient oils used in the preservation of documents and artifacts. The deeper one descends, the stronger the scent of molten metal and rich minerals from the mountain walls. The Grungerheld also burn a unique incense made from underground mushrooms and moss, meant to ward off intruders with specific sensory deterrents only dwarves can bypass.

Items for sale

While Grundrimm does not traditionally offer goods for sale, the Grungerheld manage a discreet service here, offering binding pacts for item security or valuation for particularly rare artifacts, as well as custom enchantments to protect valuables. Select buyers, often those with the Grungerheld’s favor, can commission specific vault services to keep their items secure within Grundrimm for a price in precious stones or metals.
